I was outraged, boiling mad when I found out Stephen Russell wouldn't be voicing Garrett. Now my feelings about that are undergoing a strange metamorphosis. This isn't our Garrett. This isn't our City. I wish it were, but it's not. In a World that has something as bizarre as the Maw, why not some plane of existence that's slightly askew from the Thief world we know? That appeals to my imagination more than the thought that our Thief world has been supplanted by this new one. Yes, I know, that's strained rationalization, but it makes me better able to tolerate what's being done to our beloved Thief. It might even allow me to enjoy the new game.
I understand Nuth...Many of us are doing what we can in order to cope with the current unsettling circumstances...Yet, I would strive to keep a clear mind and honest spirit...as painful as that is.

Denial ain't just a river in Karath-Din. If you have to make stuff up, that should send up an alarm, not a hypnotic self-betrayal.
Yo, EM, taffers are lying to themselves to make themselves like your product! Yeah, you get the money, so who cares, right?

It may be moot anyway if there's too much 3rd-person for me to buy the game. That's something I can't tricksie away.

What do you deem as 'too much'? I presume from this statement that you don't mind a little.
So... as we already know from EM that 3P is very minimal... you don't have to worry about the tricksie stuff, right?

This gets so ridiculous I'm starting to suspect you're making fun of the froth-mouthed über-fans rather than being one. Is this your "troll-week of the year" or something? :joke:

It's painful to watch the sad negotiation of "How much 3rd-person is okay?"...for the acceptance of NuThief.
...Oh, these are desperate times indeed!

I'd have to ponder that. I'd greatly prefer none at all. I'm thinking maybe something in the range of 10 seconds per hour of play time. I don't want something that's frequently reminding me that I'm playing a game by shifting to 3rd-person. Immersion is a huge factor for me. Why is it so hard for developers to give us an option to switch all of that off? Is it ego on their part or is there some technical reason we don't have that option?

They are too invested in their creation and they love their animators heaps, so they turn off our controllers and force us to watch their show, over and over and over, when maybe I want to swing the blackjack and walk away as the body falls, or look around and check something else out, look for changes in the world, just be organic and natural, not locked into someone else's agenda and idea of kewl. Same with lockpicking. Don't take away my vision of the world around me, lock me into another world-view, move my body into position for me, and never force me to have to hit another button to disengage before the lock is picked, or to change views for myself back to the eyes in my character's head. My time is my own. I'm not playing a game to watch a movie, especially the same ones over and over per mission. I love having the movies between missions for several reasons.

EM has many games under their belt, maybe influences from other games make them include certain features into Thief. The emo looking Garrett wearing a face mask, 3rd person perspectives, focus ability are things which may appeal to new gamers who may have no experience with the original Thief series whatsoever. At the same time, they try to keep the old features to stay "true" to the game - light gem, elemental arrows, lockpicking to make sure that it is not a far cry from the original Thief series.
The balance between these two are delicate since a lot of people are not drawn to the stealth genre and they need something to appeal to the new audience and to the old fan database who have played through the games and may lose the same gaming experience when playing the Thief series. This could already been seen from Thief 3 where it was not as "great" as compared to the other games in the series but still shone through with some of its well-designed missions such as Shalebridge Cradle.
What I hope to see from the new game is of course not a replica of an old game but a game which had evolved. Smarter AIs which are able to discern Garrett in the dark if Garrett is in the line of sight when distance between them are shorter, AI's who would notice that loot are missing or lights that have gone out, AIs which can climb ladders or swim in water, opening windows causes cold draughts which can be felt by guards, loud music playing in the estate which muffles the sounds of guard's footsteps etc. If these were in the game, maybe the new features would be justifiable since the game became more challenging. But if the features are there for the sake of appealing to the new gamers who have not played stealth games, then I guess the new gamers would never know the true Thief experience.

Yes, evolved, progressed, not beholden to simpler player tech or standardized expectations and formulae. There are many ways to advance the AI without breaking the Thief difference.
