Good grief! I've just been away for a couple of days looking after my 1-year-old granddaughter. She's got about 5 words and I would rather listen to those 5 words over and over again for 48 hours than read any more of the drivel that's gone on for the last several pages. (Apart from a few interesting exceptions.)
thiefessa - if you are here as an ordinary fan, then I would strongly suggest you don't start any more threads entitled 'Official . . .' [Edit] In fact, I suggest you expunge the word official from your vocabulary.
Those of you who've got a beef with EM and/or EM forums, yes we know - you keep telling us.
And yes, I've spent several hours today on a train with a number of people who seem to think that having conversations on their mobile phones and think the rest of the people in the train want to be included, has made me very, very grumpy.
You all have a right to express your opinion about the game. You do not have a right to bore everyone else to death with personal bickering.

However, if some new people wanted to film LotR again to make their own version of it, I wouldn't see replacing Elijah Wood with someone else as a problem at all. Elijah Wood
isn't Frodo Baggins, he's just an actor who did a pretty good job at playing that role, but I can't see any reason why some other actor couldn't do the same just as well.
Stephen Russell didn't just do Garrett's voice, he helped define many of the most important characters in Thief. LotR has a long history before Elijah Wood who is not intimately connected to the role as Frodo. I'm not sure but I don't think
Peter Jackson's film version of the LoTR trilogy has a strong fan following either. If we are going to continue that analogy anyway I think it would be more apt to consider what would happen if they replaced Elijah Wood with Hayden Christensen in Return of the King because of some nonsense technicality. More upsetting though (in this particular hypothetical example) would be the decision to strike Galadriel, Gandalf, Saruman, elves, dwarves, ents, orcs and turn Sauron into an evil Baron in order to tone down the overly magical elements in a vain attempt to attract a wider audience that might otherwise have trouble to comprehend such difficult and otherworldly concepts. It might end up being a great film (unlikely though) but it wouldn't be LotR. In Thief, not casting Stephen Russell is no doubt the biggest mistake though.

What else can we do?
To continue with Thief while emphasizing "reboot" and the "imaging of Eidos Montreal" disgusts me. They take the short cut by latching onto the Thief title to eh hem "steal" what was created before by LGS, announce it early on to the fans while temporarily naming it Thief 4 as if it was a direct continuation of the franchise, only to reboot it while taking Garrett away from us by filling it with an imposter for some fancy cutscenes no one cares about, minimize the fantastical elements of Thief because it is apparently embarrassing for them to include it in their "immersive" and "realistic" version of Thief, rip us out of 1st person for some cool rope climbing tricks or whatever ect, ect.
Change the name of the product and I might buy it. Slap me in the face with a watered down imposter version of Thief and I will not. I care enough about what LGS created not to endorse an attempt at latching on to a franchise for the sake of having an automatic fan base to draw from, to pick and choose what from the originals fits in their "new, dark, gritty, hip, Nolan type Batman" version, while taking away the spirit of the game. The voice actor change was the last link to the original. I would rather an indie company get the writes to Thief and create a true addition to the games cannon. Someone who wasn't so confused about Thief that they played around with 3 person. That was an option on the table they played with? Really? Many statements like that and the obviously insecure statements about how "hardcore" of a gamer they are and how much they love the originals sounds false and makes them seem very insecure when they are trying to give reassuring nods to Thief fans.
I just wish the guys working on TDM got their hands on Thief 4 and were paid to do it. That is an example of taking gameplay of a beloved franchise and improving on what is there while adding additional gameplay elements. The true fans have set the example. Time to follow and see if you can do better EM. Who can make a more perfect Thief successor? My bets are on TDM guys.

True that. How dare they abuse a fanbase such as ours! Exploiting us! Preying on our open mindedness, our hearts so full of love, our souls so eager for new experiences? It's nigh criminal!

The case that it isn't so makes their decision even more baffling.
