I agree with the first part, not so much on the second. If they had gone with SR, think how much hype could have been generated with a trailer using his voice. And they must have known that no matter how good the new guy is, he couldn't possibly top the master himself, SR. One of the most recognizable voices in gaming. I just can see any upside to using a completely new guy.
As far as caring what the fans think, I believe they do, there's been several mentions of pleasing & accommodating the old school types. But on this particular decision, they goofed.
Oh, I meant replacing the Thi4f logo. People begged and pleaded and even made a replacement logo for them. They didn't care about the fans then.
Getting rid or Russell is a much bigger issue, though. Frankly, I don't understand why they didn't just go with a sequel. TDS even set us up for an older Garrett and a new protagonist. Maybe they thought that the demographic they are aiming for would be too afraid to play with a girl.

I think it's because there were too many things they didn't like about the original series and didn't want to be bound by them.

Didn't like and/or didn't understand. Also, by doing it 'their way', EM will be able to reach a much wider variety of gamers. They're planning on T4 versions for consoles, so why not throw in the super-duper action (parkour) that will appeal to action-hungry gamers; keep the plot light and easy to understand (Garrett vs. bad-ass Baron & his City Watch lapdogs (*yawn*)) so that the younger gamers won't get bored or lost by any plot twists, give Garrett a whole bunch of shiny new updated weapons/accessories (surprised they just didn't give him an automated crossbow) to appeal to yet another demographic of gamers, make up a new story as to how Garrett got the scar and mechanical eye - a different, easier to understand story that doesn't involve stoopid magic, and then make him look like a kick-ass ninja that will appeal to gamers who think it's ultimately cool to play as a character who looks like a kick-ass ninja. But hey! They're calling it 'Thief' and the main protagonist's name is 'Garrett', so that should satisfy the hard-core Thief fans, right? Face it; it's their turf, they're calling the shots, and sadly, our opinions don't seem to mean diddly-squat when compared to potential profit - and to make a profit on this game they're going to have to make it appeal to a lot of different types of gamers.
But who knows? Maybe, just maybe, the game might turn out to be somewhat decent and playable afterall. We can only hope, right?

I brightened that image considerably when editing it, and even had to turn up saturation to put color back into it. It's called the Dark Engine for a reason, taffers! :laff:
Besides, it was for Dia, taken from Unwelcome Guest, not Life of the Party.
