Talking of being judgmental... aren't these your own opinions on EM's reasoning? :p
When so many people share the same opinion, you begin to wonder if they may be right.

Don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but, I'll post an announcement over on Black Cat, get a few more at least.

Not at all. The only thing I wonder about is how come so many people are so willing to believe everything they read. :cheeky:

You do have a valid point, Cloud. However, it's not just our opinion because even though EM never came right out and stated it, they did offer little snippets like (quotes taken from the RPS article -
(http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/03/thief-voice-actor-2/):) (NOTE: This link no longer works - don't know why.) Quote:
Eidos Montreal offer that “the actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts”, though politely and understandably don't explicitly state why Russell can't do this)
'
Politely and understandably don't explicitly state' .... inferring that EM didn't want to come right out & insult SR - claiming his age to be a factor in their decision, so chose to be more tactful in giving their reasons for not hiring him.
Quote:
Added narrative director Steven Gallagher, “With the new visual of Garrett we'd created, we found that there was a disconnect that we couldn't ignore between the concepted character and Stephen's voice today.”
Quote:
Verbert again: “We could have pasted Stephen's voice on top of the actions and stunts of someone else, but this wouldn't appear natural. It really wouldn't make any sense to capture the full performance for our other characters, but not for our star.”
So though it wasn't
stated, it was pretty much inferred that EM didn't think SR was quite up to the task of performing his own stunts.
I have to say, this little gem had me scratching my head:
Quote:
“Stephen was considered quite heavily,” claims Gallagher. “We actually had him in for some preliminary vocal recordings in fact... But when it came down to it, we ultimately realized that holding onto Steven as the voice of Garrett just for the sake of our nostalgia would be like wanting to cast Sean Connery again in the new 007 movies... It's a nice thought, but honestly, it wouldn't make sense for anything else other than nostalgia.”
This one cracks me up because Mr. Gallaher doesn't seem to realize he's talking about the fact that they're rebooting a game that's over ten years old. Or, as RPS put it, "
Their current employment exists purely because of nostalgia." And statements like this (made by EM T4 employees) are supposed to be reassuring that EM's getting it right just
how?
Yep, I think our opinions are as valid as those of EM's T4 dev team. Only they're the ones holding the reins.

The line about Russell being too middle-aged to do 20,000 lines of dialogue said it all for me.
Renault on 29/4/2013 at 22:48
"Nostalgia" - they make it sound like some kind of gimmick. All the while ignoring the fact SR is still perfectly capable of handling the role he essentially created, unlike Sean Connery who's like 85 years old now. :p
"It's a nice thought." How insulting, demeaning, and condescending that little quote is. I wonder if they even realize it. I can just picture them giving all the diehard Thief fans a little dismissive pat on the head.

Obviously the new Garrett is just a kid. A kid with a ton of energy who isnt serious at all, and just wants to run and jump around and leap tall buildings in a single bound. Focus included, to slow down the action when its time to kill. Im kidding of course, after the initial "media blitz", its just that the lack of new information is getting strange. They promised some sort of gameplay video. If one simply had the tools in front of them, they could easily capture quality footage. They obviously have the tools, so wheres the footage thiefessa. Why has official information dropped off the radar so suddenly.

From everything I've read about the 'hands-off' demo EM previewed to the select few, they obviously have their hands full with technical difficulties. I rather doubt we'll be seeing a gameplay demo anytime soon. Though this could be a good thing in giving them time to sort things out.
Maybe.

Okay, first of all, it must be said that I have not played many new game titles recently. Over Christmas I finally finished DX:HR and I thought it was a very good game. It was as faithful to the original while incorporating modern elements as it possibly could have. I point to DX3/DXHR and say "THIS is the perfect example of a modern game. Every game should be like this." I still prefer older games, mostly because it's all my non-gaming laptop can handle here in college, but DXHR remains a positive step for our time.
Second observation, I continue to marvel at how TTLG continues to thrive to this day. I've been a reader on and off since 2003, and I can't recall such a time when the TTLG forces were mobilized unanimously like this, for so long. I mean, I don't think 3800 is enough to get Eidos Montreal to really change anything (nothing really is but that's beside the point), but 3800 for any internet forum is pretty darn good, and commendable. Well done Vae and everybody.

Now, to Russell. Without question his work was absolutely amazing, and crucial to all three previous titles. I strongly believe that, while he's still alive/able/willing, official Thief titles starring the Garrett character must be characterized vocally by Stephen Russell. I mean, it's so easy! All that talent is right there! He is an amazing resource, and to refuse to use that resource, which is what Eidos Montreal is doing, is just puzzling and doesn't make any sense. It's like scientists refusing to attend a lecture given by Edison, or a musician skipping a Bach recital.
Eidos Montreal could have spun this much better than they did. They basically said "We're not going to use Russell because we felt like it." Also could be interpreted as "We're not going to use him, just because it would be nostalgia to the older fans." Maybe they are trying to alienate the old crazies on purpose?? Regardless of anything else, Montreal's handling of the situation was absolutely awful and enourmously significant. They have a self-inflicted turkey on their hands.

This incident has kind of been an eye opener for me, a 'stop and wait' sort of thing. Usually, I read very little into pre-release hype for a game whatsoever. However, now that I stop and think about it, all the little pieces are starting to add up.
1. 4 years after the initial announcement, little progress has been made. Until recently, NO progress had been made publicly until the screenshot release. I know you have to work and sometimes block out the public, but 4 years is too long to not even through the public some table scraps.
2. Apparent infighting. I guess some of the project leads have recently resigned? The 4 year radio silence could also be indicative of internal confusion and where the project is going. The classic Fan v Modern internal conflict. If the Fan side is winning your game will lose, and maybe the company is struggling with the balance right now. Maybe need to draw some good vibes from DX3.
3. The game will already fall well short of the TTLG community expectations. Sort of like the Phantom Menace movie, it is already doomed in this regard. If it somehow overcomes that or even significantly reduces that ill will or the immense hype and negative discussion, that will be a major accomplishment. Of course, even releasing the game at this point would be a major accomplishment.

Okay, now to thiefessa. Thiefessa, you are being absolutely over the top. It's crystal clear that you are here purely on assignment from Eidos, despite what you may say to the contrary (and, that's what I believe). You are deliberately trying to put yourself on a pedestal, rile up the public by saying controversial things (especially in here!), posting every four or five posts ALL THE TIME, and then trying to mask it underneath smiley faces. Now you will no doubt respond to this in some fashion and try to get into a long protracted conversation with me, try to poke little holes in what I have typed and run around in circles, to which I respond: THIS IS THE INTERNET. I am not writing my comps, it's not perfect. I will engage back with you to a point, assuming you respond to this, but not excessively like you will attempt.
The idea of EM trying to jump on this Russell bandwagon in any way shape or form is absolutely AN OUTRAGE. EM has a very shady agenda with that, which isn't as obvious as the rest of this mess. It got my skin to crawl, pretty much for the first time here since we had that SuperMario character years ago. Yuck.

In closing, I am waaaay late to the party with this; such is life. But it's always great to be a part of these kinds of threads that define this place. And it made me think twice about not buying T4. But it's Thief, you say! How could I not buy it even if I hated it? But the thought, for the first time, crossed my mind today, and if you are Eidos Montreal, that is a worrying development.
Carry on, Agent.
