I first played Half-Life on a P166 with a Voodoo Banshee. Now, 10 years later, I have a super nice computer to play it on, and I feel very, very old.
10 years. My God.

Wow - Halflife was the first shooter game I ever played on a PC. I remember being so frustrated with the giant whatever it was with the beak killing me over and over as I tried to make it around that pit. A friend said, "go look at a walkthrough."
A what?
That's when I discovered the gaming community on the internet. My life went downhill from there. ;)

Ditto on it being my first "proper" shooter. I don't know if something so seminal can ever be bested. It was such a ridiculously polished cinematic experience that in comparison to its nearest peers, it was so above and beyond that it raised the bar to this level that every game now has to achieve as a bare minimum.

It's the best pure shooter ever made. Bar none. And that includes the new iterations of the same game. I played it about 3 months ago, for like the tenth time, and still enjoyed it tremendously. It was truly an innovative game in all aspects.
It was my first real shooter as well and I remember playing it in software mode with 4 megs of video ram and a total of 64 megs for the whole comp! We've come a long way baby.

"They're waiting for you, Gordon. In the test chamber..."
And the ball hasn't stopped rolling since...
Great times.
