I should probably get around to it at some point, but I've honestly never played either HL or Unreal (or Sin, for that matter). Around that time I think I was still heavily into Descent 2/Hexen 2 and discovering Thief/MAME. I think part of the problem was that my only first-hand experience with HL was watching someone play on Xen for a bit, and thinking it didn't look like a good time.

Half-Life was great, but it could have been a lot more memorable for me if I hadn't started it right after finishing Unreal and Sin. Everybody remembers Unreal, but I think Sin is often overlooked because it's release was eclipsed by Half-Life. It was a pretty darn good game and I liked it almost as much as Half-Life.

if anybody doesn't know yet Unreal Gold is available on GOG.com for 10 bucks. I bought it yesterday.

having to choose between Unreal and Half-Life is like having to choose which of your children to shoot in the face. They're both absolutely fantastic, awe-inspiring games - very different, but some of the best memories I have of gaming come from those two games (and their various sequels to a lesser extent!) - I think HL just about pips Unreal to the post though because of the extremely high quality and quantity of mod content for it.

HL1 and Unreal. The start of my FPS gaming.

I don't know why everyone slobbers Unreal's knob when after leaving the Vortex Rikers, the game slowly stops being amazing and transitions into annoying.

Opposing Force. possibly best expansion ever IMHO... being a military bad-ass in that was nearly as good as the full game. Well, I thought so anyway.

Unreal was mostly repetitive and tedious. I liked the expansive environment the game engine provided and going corrr! when I first saw that windmill. I remember being confused by most of the level design or maybe I was just too much of a beginner. And I didn't detect much AI apart from zigzagging.
Half Life had it all though. I don't think any PC game level has come close to the Blast Pit and the tentacled monster and then you had the ingenious set-pieces of soldier versus monster versus Gordon where it was worth playing again as a spectator.

Isn't the Vortex Rikers the ship you start on? If so there are many more amazing sights from there on eg. that castle you see when you start up, the crashed ship in the canyon, that city in the sky etc. It certainly wasn't without its dull sections though, personally I was no fan of the water temple stuff near the start and the alien bounter hunters ship.

I liked OF, but I hated the new aliens. The game would be much better with old stuff only.
