Explain to me how Unreal is not mediocre without using the Vortex Rikers bit.
I like Unreal for the level design and fighting the baddies. Back in '99 (when I first played it) I had never fought anything as fast and dangerous as the Skaarj. With gigantic outsides, great graphics and catchy music it can only get better. I have replayed Unreal many times more often than Half-Life, the only game that competes with Unreal in my list of replays is System Shock 2.

Unreal music was a bit special it must be said.

Aside from the graphics, which were spectacular for the time, and the sound, Unreal's level design was tops. Bluff eversmoking, sunspire, ISV Kran, Nali castle, even the water temple. These are some of the coolest levels of any FPS.

What he said.
When I think of "memorable moments" from computer games, there's a few obvious candidates:
The Cradle from Thief DS
The "Bear Pits" conversation in Thief
"Dive Dive dive!" from Freespace 2
Return to Kharak in Homeworld.
However, and to avoid derailing this into that other thread on memorable moments, Unreal and Half Life are probably waaay ahead in having many such moments. Heywood's described most of them
I'd just like to add the entire stretch from Harobed Village, through Terraniux, ISV Kran, Spire Village, Sunspire, Na Pali Haven, then down to Bluff Eversmoking.
Truly awesome design.

I could not fully appreciate HL and Unreal as I was too busy discovering porn and masturbation at that time.

I discovered that a full year earlier so I got that out of the way in time.

Got it out of the way? Hell. I discovered all that about 5 years before you both, and I'm still doing it.

Nobody ever seems to sit around and fondly recall 1997's FPS of the year, DF2: Jedi Knight. What is the deal with that? That game blew away everything before it too. Told a decent story, had absolutely unbelievably expansive levels, and looked decent for its time. The game had a multiplayer community that was quite big and happy for a long while, too.
HL was good stuff. Unreal was great. Not sure which I prefer. I like Unreal an awful lot though for many reasons. I liked Unreal's multiplayer more than HL's as it was UT-before-UT. I played tons of Unreal multiplayer (that's where Deck 16 came from).
I really don't like HL2 much though. It's just way too linear for me. And while all shooters are inherently linear, HL2 loves to put it in your face.
