I played Half-Life 1 in software mode about halfway through. Then, my friend got rid of his Voodoo 1 card (yes, Voodoo 1, 'cept it was just called a Voodoo, with the pass-through cable), and I played my first game with a 3D accelerator.

Still, HB HL, you were a fun game.

haha doctorfrog your post is great A++ would lol at it again
For me I didn't really notice Thief until 2004, incidentally that was also the year Half-Life 2 came out- which means I caught on to the similarities between The Haunted Cathedral and Ravenholm right away. It's no secret that TDP is Marc Laidlaw's favourite game and so the influence is that much more obvious.

400x300 baby. All the way through.

I got through the whole damn game in 400x300 with severely jerky sounds (We-wel-welc-welcome to-o-o th-the Bl-lac-lack M-mes-esa tr-tr-trans-ansi-sit sy-syst-stem...) and using the arrow keys and Enter to shoot. It wasn't until much later that I learned the joys of WASD and being able to use a mouse! I still to this day don't know how I did it - I certainly wouldn't be able to do it again!

What?
Yeah I was trying to say that the 3 games may be different in "story" or whatever, but they are similar in how they aren't very serious.

I had that too on the first PC I played Half-Life on. _snd_mixahead 0.2 is your friend in that case. I would have given up on the game if it had kept stuttering like that.

I played it with a Orchid Righteous 3D. Voodoo1. Wow were those the days of new game experiences or what?
I feel like we're still living in ~1998 but have more prettiness now (and that's about it). Oh we also have the MMO scourge, that annoying Wii thing, and excessively market-empowered console-wannabe-PCs. :)

IMHO, we haven't stagnated, we have gone BACKWARDS as far as gameplay is concerned. We have only progressed graphically.

I really must insist that you be more specific, lest I strike you most roughly.

1998. My first PC. Don't they sell games for these things? Hmmm. I wonder if I'd like doing that. Oh there's a games shop in that shopping centre (mall) that I've walked past about, oh, a million times. I must go in there next time I go shopping.
Wow all these big boxes. I wonder what's so big inside them? But what do I buy? What's this? Half-Life Game of the Year Edition. So it must be good right? I mean if they won some game of the year competition. Buy that.
What's this one. Oh what a cool cover. Dark and mysterious. Name's kind of hard to read though. Let me see now. System Shock 2. Well I've got enough money for one more. Might as well get this one...
