I thought 'mob' in an MMO context was just referring to a 'mob' of enemies? I learn something new every day.

No, it does indeed refer to anything that's "mobile". The term originated from MUDs/MOOs. Probably internal terminology from the game engine.

Methinks the difference lies in the pronunciation: "mob," with a short "o," to denote ... well ... a mob; and "mob," with a long "o," which is shorthand for "mobile."
I'll still use the term "enemy." Makes far more sense.

"Mob" isn't a euphemism. It's jargon.
