Oh, oh, oh...as I was starting to rewrite it dawned on me what you were saying and I think I understand now. There is a switch you need to find that's nearby in another room that will open the doors your looking for you to get to the next step of using the scope. Did you get the power on? As you read the switch near the control panel doesn't work so you have to find the other switch to open the door that does have the one you need to use. Is that more of what you wanted to know about?

OH! That's the switch they were talking about. Yup, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll go hunt for tghat other switch then.

Well you said you would go hunt for it...soooo go hunt. :D I can't tell you the exact location now since I haven't played it for awhile...but you should find some areas nearby the scope areas to check out. Rooms nearby but not where the guard is downstairs but to the left side around some machinery there's a panel with either one or two switches (have you done those yet?). If that's not enough I guess you'll need to wait for someone else to pick it up from here as that's as much I can remember about that now. Good Luck and welcome to the forum anyway. :)

The controls for the telescope door are in the small room off the main telescope room, IIRC - one large knob which you have to hold down the frob key to turn.
I think you also had to turn on the power before you could work it. That's done via a lever in the metal-floored room nearby.

No I don't think that's what your trying to do. In fact, now I'm a little confused about what it is your trying to do. Are you in fact trying to get the scope to work? Did you get the power turned on? You didn't answer that question I asked before. What door are you wanting to open...for the scope or some other regular door elsewhere? Please try to describe a bit more what objects have you got checked off..what needs to be done yet? I still may not be able to answer but your answers might help someone else understand what your trying to do. :)
EDIT: LOL, well I guess you finally got the idea and was in the location I tried to explain for you to do. Thanks NV for your help in clearing up the problem too so he could understand! :)

Yeah, the problem was that the button I was pressing all along had to be held down, not just clicked. When I clicked it it was go a little bit and make a fizzle sound. I got confused that I was at a wrong button when all I had to do was just hold it down.

OK, I have been down in the cave under the telescope, nabbed some gems and Leo's key, but how do I get up again? I can't seem to get out of the shaft with the ladder (the area where Garrett said 'this is a snug fit' before entering on the way down). I tried wiggling on top of the ladder, mantling the shaft edge in all four directions, etc. to no avail.

Finally got up from the cave. The ladder seems not to go high enough to be able to walk off the shaft from it, and I get no mantling sounds at the top of the ladder, trying to get up. But I managed to get up with the help of two crates that I stacked on top of that little red light in the shaft. This allowed me to (after many attempts) jump up on the floor under the telescope.
Ran into the problem with unfrobbable gems in the chest. Will try again without slashing the banner by the chests!
Two other weird things:
* I could not see one of the nebulae - the lower light for hight adjustment never lit up. I went through the whole range of telescope height adjustment several times. The upper and middle light lit and went out "passing through" in the range but not the bottom one.
* Leo's desk is pickable, but the only thing that happens to me if I pick it is that, after it's unlocked, I can frob it once and nothing happens other than it no longer highlights...
