Have to 2nd Chasm. That game if you stuck with it gets really awesome from midway in. Just like Deus Ex 1 it has a really crap 1st level though.
Other than Chasm there's Blakestone, Ken's Labyrinth and The Fortress of Dr Radiaki.

There was an open world game called The Terminator (based on the movie). Very difficult.

That was real 3D, though, if I remember correctly. Earlyish, non-textured polygons'n'all.

Yep. Done by this little known developer called Bethesda. There's a bunch, but the most talked about ones are Future Shock and Skynet. I remember playing the Skynet demo back in the day and being wowed by the level of graphicsosity in it; the gameplay, not so much.
How little things have changed in 20 years.

I only ever played the demos of Future Shock and Skynet as well. The most amazing detail imo was that on your lasergun there was a little nightvisionscope and you could actually see stuff through it!
I believe the game Weasel is refering to was this one:

Never played it but technically it's quite impressive for it's time.

Ah, the memories (especially Cybermage - I freakin' loved that game). Might get on a 2.5 D kick myself.

That reminds me. There was also Terminator Rampage. That game was hard as hell. Fun though.

I'd recommend Heretic 1, it's gothic Doom pretty much. Skip Hexen 1 though:- it's the epitome of dated as hell, rubbish level design in hindsight. "I just flipped a switch. What the fuck did it do?!"
Dark Forces should be fully playable with the DarkXL engine these days.
