Not much to add to this, except to third Outlaws. Play it.

That being said, Hexen's expansion, Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, is pretty decent.

I was going to mention this. It was an interesting game and sort of a comic book style shooter. I remember getting all the way to the end and being unable to figure out how to kill the big bad. I never played it again after that.

You got me there Koob. Not sure why I never considered Wolf as a WWII shooter.
As for Heretic and Hexen, like I said I've played all the Doom engine games. I DO have Deathkings of the Dark Citadel however and have never played it. got it in a steam bundle. I actually forgot about it so thanks for mentioning it Deth.
Doom64 I've also played a bit. I know there are 2 versions of it floating around. I played the version that was all reconstructed for PC. I think what I want to do would be to play the direct port from the Rom.

YMMV, but I thought Heretic was boring as shit, and Hexen was pretty great. It oozes atmosphere, something Heretic severely lacked. Depends though, Heretic is a pure shooter, whereas Hexen focuses more on puzzles, which may not be your thing. I personally really liked solving the puzzles and finding out which switch does what. It's not that hard at all, actually, it's just not everyone's thing so some people get impatient and frustrated. Different strokes for different folks.
Trust me on Hexen being far more atmospheric though. Heretic is ultra-bland in that department.

Like I said. Played all the Doom engine games. (aside from DKOTDC)
I found Hexen to be terrific fun played on GZDoom with a friend doing Co-op. By myself not quite as much, but MP with different classes on ultra difficulty. That was fun.
I'm pretty much in agreement about Heretic. But that's me today. Me 15 years ago thought it was the cats ass.
Some of the custom Doom wads I've played have been really good, but I get confused trying to install the proper combination of source ports and plugins to get some of the better ones running.
I remember really enjoying the one with the quad barreled shotty. Anybody remember what that one was called? It was awesome.

Historical accounts vary.
