Gonna be honest with you, Hexen is terrible. Hexen 2 is great, but that's not 2.5D now is it?

Hexen was my favorite. Had the right mix of everything for me. Heretic I quite liked also.
Hexen 2 just felt like a different beast. Like jumping from Wolf 3D and Doom 2 over to Quake. More to do with the switch from 2D to 3D I guess. But I dunno the combat just felt different as well as a difference in how everything looked (taking 3D out of the equation). Hard to explain.
The only way I can think of describing it is that Heretic and Hexen 1 have more of a fantasy medieval style look with a style that was very reminiscent of many fantasy medieval games around that period of time, whilst Hexen 2 from what I can remember was far more castle centric and blocky in appearance, and so lacked the outside areas that were common in Hexen 1 for example (ala swamps etc).

2 titles I remember from the PS1 which might be doable via emulator: PO'ed, Zero Tolerance. Can't even remember if either are good (though I did spend ages on Xero Tolerance, I remember PO'ed being quite hard).
[EDIT] Actually, Zero Tolerance was on the mega drive.

Hexen was great if only because, afaik, no one had ever done levels with a central hub like that before. Hexen and Descent were the first first-person games I can ever remember where playing online co-op with someone was actually helpful and fun.
Hexen 2 shat all over it with puzzles that weren't just "pull this switch then run around every map that you have access to and see what changed". Also, most of Hexen 2 was outside, and the entire first hub (and the hub where you revisit Blackhmarsh, may have been the expansion) was about as generic British medieval fantasy as you can get.

I preferred Hexen to its sequel simply because of the atmosphere and the punch of the weapons. Yeah, the 'puzzles' are lame but I never really had much trouble finding where to go and I still play it occasionally. I liked Hexen II well enough but it was made during those very early days of 3D shooters. Environments could be pretty bland and the shootin' feedback was seriously lacking when compared to gloriously animated blood 'n' guts explosions of the old sprite games.
Quake rises above those issues because of its strong atmosphere and awesome monster designs.

Apparently there's new material for Doom 2 that was originally on one of the the xbox versions and is now available via Doom 3 BFG Edition.

You mean Doom 3? Otherwise if it was meant for Doom 2 would have made more sense to have it in that.
If this is that extra ultra difficult episode for Doom 2 that was exclusive to the xbox version then that was ported over by fans for the PC version a while back.

Remember, Doom 3 BFG comes with Doom 1 and 2 too, albeit heavily censored versions, and the Nerve Software-developed episode can be played with an original uncensored copy of Doom 2.

So they did more than remove the red crosses from health packs?
EDIT: Ah, apparently they censored the two secret Wolf 3D remake levels too. Why honestly? Because they couldn't be arsed releasing a unique German version?
