I dont recall having any particular feelings towards the first level, but I Thought it did a decent job of illustrating all of game's core mechanics and freedom of choice.
My favorite is a non-city one where I think you start on top of a rooftop of some lab building with gated area around it and some hangars, guard towers and bots. It's basically a whole, complete, and logically-laid out building and surroundings fully modeled, and you can take your pick how you approach the entire level. None of the pre-defined paths of invisible walls bullshit. Now that's what emergent gamplay is about.

Oh man, X-51 is a great chapter.
I'm partial to Paris, myself though.

Damage Incorporated is a fun one that people here may not have played, based on the Marathon engine and because of that better known in Macintosh circles even though a PC version existed as well. The novelty was that it was one of the earlier tactical/squad based first-person shooters, where you go around killing off KKK members and religious cultists with three selected soldiers out of several, each with different stats and personalities (for example, if you take the tough gung-ho loud-mouthed Duke with you to fight off secessionists, he'll end up joining them partway through).

There's a really old Raven Software game, predating their id relationship called CyCloneS. Shouldn't be hard to find a copy of, but it's a game that is plenty similar to DOOM, and has free-aiming controls similar to system shock (although, I'd say it's more comfortable than system shock.)
Give it a try. It's got a pumpin' soundtrack and some cool levels. A self-healing system where you manage energy and health resources in an on-screen inventory - again, similar to system shock.

There are a couple of official map sets for Doom 2 that aren't quite easy to play. First is No Rest for the Wicked, originally exclusive to the XBLA version of Doom 2 but ported over to PC for the BFG edition. It doesn't function properly outside of the BFG port without a proper MAPINFO lump, which someone has already put together. The other is the Master Levels which is not easily gotten hold of and even less easily played as it's a collection of 20 disparate, unconnected wads. However, someone has put together a tool that combines all 20 maps (21 if you count a secret level) into a single contiguous episode. Both require ZDoom or a fork thereof. I'll gladly provide links to the MAPINFO wad and the tool, but you'll have to get the wads yourself. They're not hard to find, mind you...

You can get the master levels on Steam.

Looks cool, thanks for the info RBlinds.
Release year was 1994. Raven developed it but it seems SSI was the publisher. So I'll bet nobody really heard of it because SSI would have been throwing all of their effort into Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager. Shattered Lands was such a great AD&D based RPG that they probably thought Ravager would appeal more to people that some sci fi shooter when Doom had already taken everybody's imagination.
For what it's worth. I couldn't stand Wake of the Ravager. Shattered lands was by far the better Dark Sun title. They should've pimped this game a bit more. It looks fun. I'd also say the aiming system is very much like Realms of the Haunting.

The only reason I hate the beginning of DX is because I've played it about 20x more than the rest of the game. I would probably be quite fond of it otherwise.
