I basically lost all respect for Irrational Games after the whole Bioshock DRM fiasco. Unless they've seriously changed, I don't think they deserve to get that name back.

that's your guess for the countdown ?
I thought this was already described in previews/gameplay videos (
where you see your reflection in the water after "waking up")......well, I hoped for "our new game is: SWAT5, an xbox exclusive"
I think they'll want to create some instant association with the brand and BioShock, their new cash cow - just a guess.
And my comment re: impressive intro sequence is reflective of the fact that it's one of the few things BS did well.

Bioshock is awesome sauce. Come on. It isn't System Shock 3. It was inspired by the series, but does its own thing. It isn't a hybrid FPS/RPG ala DX/SS2 (even though it was pretty much promised to be), but a relatively linear, focused, streamlined FPS with a few tricks up its sleeve and a bit of emergent gameplay. I would classify it in the same category as Half-Life 2, as opposed to DX/SS2.
I don't remember your personal quibbles with it but ,so far, in my mind the only flaw is it starts very slowly. The first ~3 hours are snooze city.
The rest of this is not aimed at you, S_T
Sadly, TTLG persecutes it similarly to Invisible War, they both stand alone very well, but if you are going to put them under a microscope to compare and contrast them with their predecessors, you are only going to suck all of the fun out of them.
Thief 4 will be hated around here (at least in Thief Gen), because after all of these years of those guys playing the same. damn. game. over and over and over again (via FMs and OMs), any changes will be foreign and therefore "not Thief-like" and the game will be automatically dismissed. Regardless of the game sticking to the current standards/trends of games while trying to retain the feel and ambience of the originals. The industry has changed in 12 years ffs.

well, there's evolution and ripoff, there's common sense and there's corporate interests. We'll see which of the opposing poles Irrational will drift to. Bioshock wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good either. And that's not enough to compete with the finest games out there. Enough for Best100 maybe, but certainly not Best50 or Best10. You know all of the reasons Bioshock failed in the eyes of a few posters here and most of them (when stripped of insults and exaggerations) are valid concerns. Things that would not matter somewhere else but DO in the right context. And in the end, like many say, it's important to have fun and satisfaction while playing a game. I only remember finishing it reluctantly, pressing myself on so I get over with it.
BUT
that's also the best position to deliver a truly phenomenal sequel that perverts and improves everything from the first "draft". So we'll see about BS2. Now - after the initial year-long shock :joke: - that I'm ok with it playing like a shooter controlled by a helium/caffeine addict BS2 could be an awesome game.
But I don't think that they will announce BS3 coming back to IR.

That site is screwed.
I'm now being asked for a password just to view the countdown.
edit; I can get there through 2kboston.com

It seems to be working again, here. (ETA 41 mins)
While it's unlikely that they're working on any game that could interest me (I know X-Com is well loved but I could never get into it.) surprises are never totally unexpected. I have my fingers crossed that it's something totally new. I doubt that we're going to see that revealed today, though.
Namdrol on 12/1/2010 at 15:26
Yes, it's back for me as well.
I think they were messing with the rest of the site, every link now redirects to the countdown.

Okay, there it is. Neat. Slick design... very Web 3.0. ;)
(no game has been announced)
