A "plug-in" suggestion - Paper, Notes and Custom Maps -
Details :
* The paper is the same image that the map uses.
* Buy paper from the shop at the cost of a few arrows. (Pack of 10)
* Paper needs to be renewed after 10 uses.
* You can write or draw on paper with three colors (blue, red, black).
* Drawing would work like Windows Paint Program. (Free Style only and lines).
* While using your custom map/notes, the game won't be paused.
* You can edit before the mission starts.
* You'll produce *Jumping Sounds* constantly when editing.
* No erasers.
* A Custom sound file will be used to represent writing.
* Your Image files will be tied to your save data.
* You can import your Map to draw over it and add details.
* All your Images Files will be erased after your mission is complete except blank ones.
* You can export your drawings to a Folder to share it with friends.
About the plug-in :
It adds some realism to the game. If I was a thief, I would write down all the items that a place might hold and strike the items I find.
The plug-in makes the map and compass more useful. It is much easier to navigate with a detailed map.
You can use the plug-in to write down codes and interesting remarks found in notes scattered in the map.
You can draw the patrol pattern of guards.
You can use the plug-in before the mission begins to draw your route.

Hello there .o/
Hmm I'm not sure I quite get it. For example why you should renew your paper "after 10 uses" if you can't erase it... I mean, using an eraser on paper repeatedly certainly damages it somehow, but just writing on it/having a look at it ?_?

Stop saying plug-in.

Sorry. I meant that you would renew the pack [10 paper] after you used all your paper. So the in-game object (paper) will have 10 uses if you click on it and choose to create a new image file. If you have done done nothing for some image file (blank), it will get
recycled.
Using existent paper will have no effect on the in-game counter. The paper won't be damaged in any way.
I decided that the price of paper per unit won't change depending on the size of your purchase.
As for no eraser, it's because you are using
ink to write.

I realized my mistake. All I meant is using a piece of code that won't modify the software or its components in any way or remove any functionality.
I'll just add a new sound object, new game model and make a paint like programming allowing free-drawing mainly.

Charcoal and other writing techniques could be used but Garrett will use something that can't be erased.

To be honest, I'm not really sure if this is something worth putting the time and effort in, because I'm not sure, if someone really would use it.
You are right, that, as a thief you would draw some maps with loot etc. but since you wrote:

Now why would a map "disappear"? If I don't throw it away or loose it or drop it in water or whatever... It would make it extremly illogical to go through all the trouble to draw a map, when it fades into oblivion after the mission and I can never use it again. I wouldn't go through all the trouble for that, if you understand what I mean. ;)
In that case it's simply better to draw one for real and have it on your table beside you while playing, because that one sure doesn't disappear. (That is, if you really need one) ^^

You can put back your exported drawings into your temporary folder manually. I might add a *hidden* option to save and retrieve the maps from the Folder where the maps are exported.
I made the maps disappear for the
sake of realism. :erg:

I'm sorry, please don't be upset, but I still don't understand why you think it's realistic, that a map simply vanishes... All the other maps also stay in your inventory in the maps section, then why not those too?
But anyway, that is actually not my main point. My main point is, that I'm not sure, someone even "needs" or wants this feature. The city sections are easy to maneuver and remember and once you've explored the map of a mission I also find that easy to remember. Plus, there are already maps of those things. Granted, they're not the best, but they serve the purpose. And if I remember correctly, I think I read here somewhere, that some people try to improve the game, for example no loading screens and so on, and in that package they also try to include better handdrawn maps.
So we're at the beginning of my first statement: I am not sure, if it is wise to put in the effort and time on your side for something that is not really needed. Maybe you could instead use that time and effort otherwise, for example by drawing those maps for the improvement (they were searching for artists, maybe they still need some)
No offense intended.
Edit: To make it clear, I know you were speaking in general, but since I only know Deadly Shadows, I only can speak for that game. But my guess is, it's not that different in the others aswell ;)

A few reasons I think, this isn't needed:
1. What is wrong with the maps already in the game?
2. Some of them are already auto-maps, starting from scratch and drawing new rooms in as you progress.
3. Some of the maps are of course inadequate, because Garrett couldn't find better maps, but...
4. ...you can always draw your own maps as you explore the mission. With a PENCIL - onto a piece of PAPER.
5. But there are very few missions where the map provided isn't good enough. The only ones that come in mind are The Sword and Life of The Party.
6. I know someone might feel the original maps are too accurate and unrealistic. Read number 4.
7. You can already make notes to your maps in Thief 2 (and NewDark Thief Gold).
8. Hand drawn image is always better than mouse drawn MS Paint image.
9. This would require quite a lot of work. Reason number 4 is enough to make it all wasted.
