Hey guys. I figured that, since this is the biggest remaining LGS fan community, I should post this here. Recently, I've become interested in BOCG, and I was wondering whether or not it has a manual. The versions being sold on Amazon are CD-only and Google has brought up no evidence that a manual ever existed. Does anyone know? The main reason I need it is for research material, but LGS had a history of making games that were impenetrable without their associated manuals. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks.

Sure it did, albeit only a small CD jewel-case sized one of ~20 pages.
The more detailed manual is actually a Windows Help format file on the CD.
The printed manual concludes thus:
Quote:
This manual has introduced you to the basic play elements of British Open Championship Golf. Explore the many other screens and features not specifically covered here. For more information, remember to consult the BOCG Online Manual. This Help document contains a complete description of all game screens and features of British Open Championship Golf, including a complete description of the game's keyboard interface. We hope you enjoy the game. May all your drives fly straight, your approaches bite, your putts drop, and the crowds roar.

Thanks! That's a huge help. I think I'll grab one of those cheap Amazon copies, then.

Glad to help, and enjoy!
I'm no golf expert, but I found BOCG to be a pretty fun game.
Oh... make sure you're getting both courses before you buy, because there was also a cut-down version of the game with only one course.
You can also copy the CDs to your hard-drive and install the game from there, which is handy.

Hmmm... that scared me away from buying a copy. The game looks interesting, but that cut-down version just doesn't seem worth the money, even if I mainly need it for the manual. Google brought up some results that mentioned a 2-course version on LGS Classics, but that site appears to be dead. Regardless, some of the people talking about it were on TTLG. Does anyone here still have the online manual from that version on their computer? It would be tremendously appreciated.

I will have a look. I know I did at one time. I'll be back around my house in 8-9 hours, I'll root around for it then.
Looking Glass has my respect for making this. It couldn't have sold shit, yet when you play it you can feel quality through and through. They could have slapped it together, it is just a golf game after all, but they seem to have paid attention to the little things and it all adds up to the most solid golf game I have played. Sucks the courses are so limited.

Thanks! I hope it's still there.

That was the most straightforward site I found for uploading, but I've not used it before, so let me know if there are any issues with downloading and I can find somewhere else to put it.

gunsmoke is on the money about the production values of this game. If memory serves, it was the first PC golf game to seriously attempt to recreate a professional golf tournament complete with the crowds, the variable weather, the dynamic voiced commentary (I'm pretty certain that was a first), and the atmosphere in general. You have a caddy to manage your clubs, and you can even ask them for advice! (well, more information about the hole you're playing, at least). There are video introductions not only to each course, but to each hole.
Two courses may not sound like a lot, but it's definitely quality over quantity, and a pretty complete package.
I would suspect (or hope) that the modern games have taken all that on board and now eclipse BOCG in every respect, but (as was their nature) LGT really did a damned fine job of this game, and it remains a fun game to play.

This is going to help me more than I can describe. I can't thank you enough!
