Hi guys, long time fan first time posting.
I was playing through The Witness last year and am replaying the original thief (and struggling through the reboot for the first time. Grim) and I realised that when I think of the atmosphere of the first, it's really those moving artwork cutscenes that I think of.
So I was wandering if anyone had ever attempted to make the gameplay look this way? Not a classic cel shaded look, but like a darker version of that moving watercolour look of The Witness.
Emulating those great original cutscenes.
I think that if the series is ever revived, this might be a more appropriate look than aiming for gritty realism. I always thought of thief as more distinct than that.
Anything thoughts? Has this been discussed before?

there is one mission with a cell shaded look "Fables of the Penitent Thief" :)

Cragscleft has plenty of cell shading.

I hadn't seen that before, good call! It looks just how I imagined it. This is really how I picture the game.
I always think the more painting-y/cartoony looming graphics age better somehow.
Also, bravo on those cragscleft comments!

Watching some gameplay of it now.
It'S VERY cartoony, haha! It's a neat idea though.
It's cool seeing that engine that way though. I reckon if the art style was made more like a graphic novel, and it was used as a graphical shader mod (or something, you can tell I'm not a programmer) it would breath some fresh air into the old games.
If they could put that shader style over the HD mods that would be sweeeeet.

Just stumbled across this for skyrim! First half of the video is obviously too bright but the second half really captures that thief cutscenes look in gameplay. Very cool. My imaginary thief sequel would probably look like this.

In real life, they'll probably make it look like call of duty.

i watched it and from what i see ,it seems like it would only work in a daytime missions, and maybe a dungeon levels with torches lighting up the graphics
but i highly doubt anyone would take the massive time to make the texture for it

There was that scifi cel shaded FM. I thought it was sliptip's (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSRSEWR93E8) Strain7 (which is still pretty cell-shaded-esque) but there was another one, where the black lines in the white walls would actually animate and was the direct inspiration for Fables of the Penitent Thief and the reason Sliptip worked on it, maybe an early version?
Blackheart Manor in Dark Mod, which has been WIP for ages now, has a cel shaded area:

IIRC it's going to see the light of day in the campaign they're making.
For T2 you have to add your own custom textures for the look.
For Dark Mod, there's a graphics option, so all you have to do is turn on that option and it does it automatically (I think).
