Will o'the wisps are supposed to be burning swamp gas, or spontaneously-combusting methane. But the mythology about them is more interesting than the science (even though it's cool that gas can burn slowly, gently, and appear as a floating ball of light). Elemental?

Those things the mages summon (not shoot) are actually AIs. They work like frogbeasts, heading for you and then blowing up.

Since the Air Mages' balls of air are AIs in the game engine, I'd have to classify them as summoned elementals in terms of the game world.
I don't have TG (just TDP), but I remember in a fan mission (Chasm of the Lost 2, part of the TTGM series) where I was on a rope or some other inaccessible place, and one of those balls of air was floating around below me. It didn't have a fist to shake nor did it say "You're making me so mad!", but it definitely was frustrated at being unable to get me.
There was a fan mission that had some weird AIs that may have been water elementals -- they were green floating balls of liquid that fired something (acid?) at me, and dripped when I inflicted damage on them. I don't remember now if it is was HOC1 or Forgotten Forest 1, but someone will come along who remembers which.

Edit: clarified something

The water elementals you are talking about are in DEDX. There were air, fire, water, and earth elementals in there. I vaguely recall some weird eyeball elementals too.

Also the water tower in the Mages level is closed due to a failed experiment with water elementals IIRC, so they exist story-wise as well.

Is the fire mages' summoning ability same that the SummonElemental (or like) in Dromed's CritterShots. The balls of fire (nice effect althou) didn't seem much AI to me...
