So what is the new book called? "At Long Last, Some Fucking Tyrion"?
Whatever. The crucial thing is we have the latest swollen volume in the increasingly swollen series by the 1-800-CALL-JENNY swollen George R.R. Martin.
(the R.R. stands for "Railroad"*)
My general disappointment with the series has been well documented around these parts--long story short: I think the series has gotten increasingly unfocused the further it strays from the center that was the Stark family--but I'm hoping Martin pulls it together like a feast of roast pheasant basted with plum sauce and grilled scallions, rotated over an open pit until the fire crackles with dripping juice and the meat just tears effortlessly from the bone.
So: who is reading this shit?
*the R.R. does not actually stand for Railroad

Last I remember from G.R.R.M was Sandkings. Fucking ace.
But this was 30 years ago. Shame he went down the potboiler route. But I heard lots of good about this Game Of Thrones thingy. Might give it a go...what would you say should be a cut off point, novel-wise?

On principle I don't read books by anyone who uses more than two forenames.

I got it and read a couple of pages before realising it had been so long since the other books that I will have to do some serious re-capping.
It was good to read in the intro that this instalment will include pov characters from Feast for Crows and move beyond that timeline very slightly.

Started it yesterday even though I'm afraid that I'll end up being too busy to finish in a reasonable time and will need to re-start it later. So far, so good, though!
Agreed re: the timeline/POV linkup - good way to move on from what has been a not-so-stellar way of splitting one book into two.
So far I'm liking it, and at about 230 pages in, if I had to pick one point of particular interest it'd be Reek/Theon's story picking up again. I think the POVs appearing in this book either carry the story better without the Feast for Crows POVs than vice versa, or just have more interesting bits of the story, and it's making a difference.

I'm reading the wiki on Storm of Swords to remind me where things were at when the interesting stories stopped.

I'm about halfway through, and so far it's been very good. It's miles better than Feast. It helps that all my favourite POV characters are in this installment, so it's like concentrated awesomeness.

Thought the prologue was really poorly written and confusing. Thank God for the first chapter being drunken surly Tyrion awesomeness, though the whores line is getting old. Getting stuck in now... will report back when I'm done!

You know how drunks repeat the same shit that bothers them over and over. But how in hell will Tyrion figure into Daenerys takeover of Westeros? I can't see it so far.
This is the first novel I'm reading on the kindle my daughter got me fathers day. I'm too old to ever develop the depth of feeling I have for books but this will provide an answer for her when she asks what I'm reading on it. I won't tell her I'm still going to buy the book to keep on a shelf.

Spoiler:
The Bran chapters are beautifully written and while are proceeding as I kind of expected with him discovering the Children of the Forest - its still full of twists and turns.
Certainly feels like its ALOT of character exposition and it feels very much like its unfolding alongside the events of AFFC.
Can't wait to see what happens and is anyone else hearing/reading rumours that he held alot back for The Winds of Winter - the next book - and so its expected in around 2yrs time?
If so that would generate enough interest as theres no way we can wait this long between novels again!
