I agree with flipation. The engine looks promising, especially the physics and the sneaking which could add a whole new realm of gameplay to the Thief series. Although it's highly unlikely that it will happen it's always nice to dream isn't it?
I am looking forward to The Dark Mod. Hopefully there will be some enhancements to the engine that we didn't previously see in Doom 3.

You don't really think that Darkmod is just a Doom 3 with slapped on textures and models?

Given the lack of an editor, it wouldn't be a very practical engine to work with. Map makers would be required to have a 3D modeling app to build their maps in, and then learn how to script the level by hand. The other option would be that someone would form a team to create a customized editor for this engine. It would be a waste of community resources when you consider the doom 3 engine will be open source in a few years and the majority of the tough work on Dark Mod will have been done by us already. Silly to start another engine. I've tried Penumbra, it's no better for Thief style gameplay than the doom 3 engine.

Am I missing something here? Isn't this the point of a mod? Or do you mean changes to the physics?

I came to realize that the D3 physics is not that bad. It just didn't make much use of it in the D3 game.

The Penumbra guys loudly namecheck Thief and Looking Glass in general as big influences on their gamedesign

Whatever that means. I have heard other games saying similar, but haven't seen much of it.
It's like with fantasy books. Almost every book has at least one "review" which says stuff like "Tolkien would have liked it." or "Best fanasty since Lord Of The Rings" or some other rubbish comparison to LOTR.
