Looking through the screenshots on the eidos site today, I spotted this one.

http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/gss/legacy/thief/images/screen5.jpgWas there a haunt in the lost city at some stage... guess there was! It seems that many things seep down into the caverns below the city, mechanists, keepers, looters, kurshok (or were they always there?) burricks and now haunts!

I have a vague recollection that there indeed was a haunt in Lost City in Dark Project. It was on the top floor of the house facing the drawbridge/arena gizmo. He was easy to backstab.
I could be talking out of my ass here, though. They removed it in Gold, since, well, it doesn't really make sense to have a fallen hammerite there. I also only have Gold these days so I can't confirm this.

Nope, There were no haunts at KD in TDP, and I should know because I spent a rather considerable time roaming around it recently, trying to match it with the T2 level to try and get a feel for what KD was like before the catastrophe.

It is strange, I also remember vaguely seeing a haunt in the lost city in TDP, which I haven't played for a long time since I got TGold. Maybe I need to play TDP again.

Why does it not make sense?
Surely countless people have been lost beneath The City. This lone hammerite could, in one example, have accidently been trapped in some tunnels and ended up in Karath-Din.
The theory may be flawed in some way, but I feel it makes enough sense to explain the Hammerite acceptibly.

We know they had to have made it there at one time or another. Karras and his crew made it after all and they were a splinter group of Hammerites. Granted that doesn't mean he found it by the time Gold took place. Karath Din most likely isn't anywhere near the city though... Garrett had to trudge through all kinds of mines/tunnels to get there plus Karras had to take a sub.

Actually, Karath Din is directly under the city... remember how you got in in TDP?
It is quite possible that Karras knew about Karath Din from a supressed report (perhaps the very fact that a haunt was created made them believe that the place was unholy) from decades ago... one the Hammerite would not want anyone knowing about.

I always wimped out on the lost city, but a haunt does sound familiar...
