Over the years, a good chunk of the FMs that have been released have been incredibly bad--yet none of those actually embarrassed me for being a player of Thief.
The same can't be said for some of the lunacy that's been posted here. Just because I find all this incredibly over-the-top flood of passionate disdain completely ridiculous, and fodder for a bit of fun, am I not a fan? Am I not a "true fan"?

Gonna rant and roll here a little bit...
I think jabbing an inanimate object like a game is one thing, but insulting a group of people is quite different. Maybe I take cuts like "Autism Ward" a bit too personally because I have a niece with Down Syndrome (just like I think it's really inappropriate to use the word "retarded" which I unfortunately see people on this forum do often), but I still think dt's comments go beyond playful jabs and into the area of being somewhat mean and unnecessary. Good hearted ribbing is more of a back and forth thing ("yeah, that's what I said to your mom last night!" "Ow, dang, you zanged me!"). There's really not much of that here. It's not a matter of having thick skin or not, it's more about "do I really want to hear this shit over and over?"
Seriously though, I don't hear many others bitch about this, so it's probably just me. Or maybe people don't care much, or maybe they just figure it's dethtoll being dethtoll. But then I see him go off on a guy like Slyfoxx, who strikes me as a really good guy, and I really have to shake my head.
To me, most of the discussion in the Thief forums is pretty normal and productive, IMO. There's a small handful of people who like to speak like Hammerites and probably take things too far, but you can't just simply lump everyone in with them. Keep in mind too, even though a lot of people have bitched about the game, it's been constructive - several changes have been made directly to the game because of those comments, stuff like removing the XP and QTE systems.
I also don't understand how a fanbase can affect how someone feels about the game itself, considering it's single player and completely separate from the community. It's bit melodramatic to say "fans have ruined this game for me!" Play the game if you want to, don't worry about the other people who are playing it.
Anyway, that's pretty much it. I tend to see the diehard nature of Thief fans as a good thing, but obviously not everyone views it that way.

And this is *exactly* why jtr left... again.
Since everyone is going through a tender part of the argue cycle right now, I will join in. I personally dont care what you people are always arguing about. Noone here is ever stoked about anything in particular, except those rare few who rave about Dark Project et al, or stragglers from other Forums. Its always this sort of boring melodramatic self-serving psychobabble that usually revolves around a few people and the ones they project their personal shortcomings onto. Oh well, I am just the hermit on the mountain (secret crpg reference that ties in with Thief :sly:) observing the various activities. If the day finally arrives where I come here and dont laugh at something, I may reconsider my approach. Fortunately for one, such as myself, there is still always a good supply of fodder to laugh at here.

No, its not you.
This seams to be the state of affairs on this forum as parts of it slowly and rather saddeningly descending into a shit-hole like so many other forums. We have a few good mods on here that do their best to curb the BS, but when the forum autocracy do *&^# all about the aforementioned arseholes then this forum will slowly die and deservingly so. Which is a shame as thie used to be one of the best forums around a few years back.

The mods have asked we keep this on topic, so we really should take this over to comm-chat where it can be debated (or aired out) properly.
Anyone want to make a thread?

I know we need to get back on topic, but Brethren's comment needs a response:

I was being a bit hyperbolic when I said "I confused Thief with Thiefgen and now I can't play the games anymore" -- it's true I don't really play Thief anymore, but I was mostly just making a joke.
But I was making a joke at Thiefgen's expense. The community around something is a big part of enjoying something. I like the Thief series. If not for Thief I never would've found TTLG probably. I want to talk about it with someone. Unfortunately, the only people around to talk about it with are
you guys. The problem is that the Thief fanbase is so small, and yet so vocal, that even just by my proximity in GenGaming I get associated with the petting zoo. At least with Fallout fandom (as an example) it's big enough, and enough friends of mine have played it, that I can discuss the games without having to go to No Mutants Allowed or, god forbid, RPG Codex. I don't even have to go to tumblr. Not so with Thief. And you guys come up with surprising new ways to be embarrassing. I've been told by a woman in her 40s who really should know better that I couldn't possibly have played Thief 1 and 2 because I like 3. It was completely surreal, because I expect that from 20-something basement-dwelling boys with neckbeards, not from a grown woman -- someone I actually consider a friend, too! I really don't understand what it is about Thief that makes people act like this. Actually, I'll expand that to immersive sims in general, if I'm being honest -- witness the shitshow over Bioshock that I'm ashamed to have been a part of for three years.
I'm in here because I'm still a Thief fan and I'm still interested in the impact of the new game, even if I don't really play the old games anymore. That doesn't mean I have to be your friend. Especially if I'm going to have to put up with the "omg square-enix shill" or "YOU NO TR00 THEEF FAN" from people who by and large
should know better -- and that includes you, Brethren, I may not expect much from Goldmoon or New Horizon but I certainly expect you to know how to act.
That's all I'm going to say about the subject. Let's get back to the reviews, what few there are.

You give yourself *way* too much credit.

Frankly, I'm surprised GD doesn't just spam a pile of RPGCodex-style "incline/decline" crap all over the forums, although I guess that wouldn't fit with the hilarious renfaire broken english.

Ok, we've had our 'after school special' moment now. Don't let it drown the thread.
Official policy is everybody gets to equally post what they think as long as they're not breaking rules or dogging people.
