There may be some discrepancies here - a number of things that were possible in Thief1 have been made impossible either by the patch or by Thief Gold. I don't know whether these are some of them.

Well, I'm trying it out in Thief Gold now and I can't seem to jump to that tree in Azal's first pic, it's just like the tree isn't even a solid object. Either that, or I'm just a really crappy jumper :p

The first arrow (onto the tree) is wrong. Look at the tree from next to the weapons table and you'll see how to make the jump.
{Edit: Oops, no. I see now he's jumping onto the windowframe first. I just jumped down from right opposite the entrance and made it onto the tree that way.}

i can get onto the tree with no problem, but i cannot get to the roof from the balcony at all. I always end up landing on the window frame.

What is it 'jumping aceleration' ? In a few words it's just a well known bug in Thief: The Dark Project/Gold and in theory with it you can reach the speed of light :)

I don't think it's an easy jump. I got to the roof after fourth or fifth attempt. You need to make two or three successive jumps to reach necessary speed for the final jump.

The easiest way to get onto that tree, IMHO, is to jump from the open window (opposite the door you just came out of)
