I know I asked this years ago, can't find the post back.
I have a poster on groundlevel, directing the taffers to go upstairs and check out the new device.
they have to go up one floor. should i name it first floor or second floor on my poster??
I understood that it is second floor in the USA but first floor in Europe.
what would be the least confusing for most players??

I'd vote for 1st floor then. Your're a Dutch-language author.

Whatever you choose, put the floor number someplace prominent, say the stairwell or outside the elevator.

And label the floors on the map.

Have the poster say:
"Go up one flight of stairs, turn left, go through some doors, and then see the device".
(Specific directions rather than naming the floor.)
Alternatively, have your people use strange and specific terms for the floors, such as "the one-above-ground floor".

Name each floor after one of Dante's circles of Hell. Or Santa's reindeer.

So the number of floors is wrong for the number of reindeer (8), circles of hell (9), Snow White's dwarfs (7), and just about anything else that's memorably named. Six is just a bad number. Maybe you should add a basement. That way you can name them after the dwarfs.

You could always name the roof. That will take care of the seventh dwarf.
