Just beautiful! I wonder what would happen if Eidos would buy the UE3 license for Ion Storm Austin back in 2004...

That would be a strange time warp, MoroseTroll. Consider though that they wanted dynamic shadows for their game, and the dynamic shadows in the UDK are still crap.
I don't remember much about St.Edgar's from TDS, but I am curious now about how mine compares to that one.

They (ISA) wanted a dynamic shadows? Maybe. But it seems to me that they wanted the dynamic shadows just because Doom 3 has them, not because of a real necessity. I think they (ISA) were temporarily blinded by what they have seen in Doom 3 alpha on E3 2002. And because of this their decision to implement the dynamic shadows (based on shadow volumes) was wrong, IMHO. They should focus on a graphics detalization (I mean texture resolution, bumpmapping, halo effect and so on) instead. But I don't blame them, because in that time it was very easy to choose wrong decision.

Halo effects rather than dynamic shadows in a game about shadows...? :weird:

The dynamic shadows in TDS are ugly, IMHO. They are too sharp, too dark, too unreal. Did you see (
http://paulmader.blogspot.com/2009/04/version-01-released.html) Paul Mader's mod "Death's End" for UT3? There are no dynamic shadows in that mod, but it looks beautiful to me. And yes, it contains halo :).

Digi, I was trying to find a picture of the ceiling of the crossing at York Minister as it is truly stunning, couldn't find one but I did find this, (
http://www.yorkminster.org/visiting/virtual-tour/) a virtual tour of York Minister, which is even better. Have a look around, and look up. ;)

@MoroseTroll: Personally I don't think the shadows in TDS (and all of them are dynamic) look sooo bad (the Doom 3 shadows for instance look worse I think), and about this Steampunk mod, it's not so much about shadows yet AFAIK and looking beautiful has not much to do with it either. I'm not even arguing against halo effects, but the priority list you gave looked really useless for a Thief game. You can probably say that TDS didn't use dynamic shadows a lot (like NPCs noticing Garrett's shadow or moveable crates to create new darkness, which however works nonetheless), but I don't think there was "no real necessity".
