Digital Nightfall: Will your work be available for free download?
Digital Nightfall on 4/2/2010 at 20:16
Well I am not planning to charge for it, if that's what you mean. :erm:

This project is beautiful, just beautiful.

One way or another everyone will be able to walk around in it, some day. (That's part of the beauty of the UDK.)

Here's the latest. The biggest new addition here is a redone western facade. The old one was a throwback to the UT2K4 version of this I did a year ago, and since the building had evolved quite substantially from that in all other areas, I felt it was time to bring that original portion up to snuff with the rest. I am still not 100% happy with the results, but I am content for now. There's also the addition of totally new roof meshes, which I think makes a tremendous different in bringing the building into reality. I tossed out the diagonal flying buttresses at the ends of the transept, since they didn't really belong there and the inclusion of the finished apse made things too visually busy. The lighting has been tweaked all around, and for this batch of screenshots I did away with the fog, kept the DOF, changed the fov from 120 to 100, and kept the sunset. (looks amazing through the windows with the DOF, I think.) I'm also thinking of ditching the Ambient Occlusion, since it seems to be making things a bit cartoony in some areas, and doesn't really add much to others.
The biggest and least visible effort was put into the optimization of lightmaps. 3dsmax is happy to generate UV mapping for the lightmaps automatically, but they come out much better if you then optimize them manually to take the best advantage of the space you have. Unoptimized, a 256 px lightmap looks pretty good. Optimized, it looks fantastic! Eliminating all lightmaps at 512 px and 1025 px also seems to have stopped the crashing errors I was getting. Those huge lightmaps were because of how I built the old western facade, which was made from some huge meshes. Now it's bits and parts of much smaller meshes, so they all uses 256 or 128.
Here they are. As usual, there's many more to be found in the flickr account.

Simply stunning. The lighting effects from the sky now give the whole thing a real sense of grounding and the massive scale.

Wonderful choice of soft light effect, sky-box and of course magnificent architecture. Cant stop browsing the pictures!

Freaky. So this is actually running in UT3? How times have changed. Can you walk around in it?
It's funny how it really doesn't evoke the original very much anymore. That seeming, either because of engine limitations or whatever, much more medieval and Romanesque (if that's the right word)
(yeah, ya been over this already. Yur doin it wrong. Start again. ;) )
But who cares. Will there be cloisters too?
