Apparently yes, we can.
"Dark Descent" is, at worst, bland. Yeah it's a descent...
into darkness. Fairly typical imagery. Ho-hum, we get it.
"A Machine for Pigs", on the other hand, brings to mind all manner of ridiculous, cartoonish, not-at-all-scary images. Aww, look at the cute little piggy with his fantabulous contraption! Oink oink squeee!
This. My first post in the thread backs it up.

The most important thing about a game is the name.

Very much looking forward to this. If the collaboration between thechineseroom and Frictional cancels out the weaknesses of each, we could be in for something quite special.

Haha, yeah, we either get the best of both worlds (great gameplay and storytelling) or the worst (no gameplay or story).
Make your bets now.

That thought had crossed my mind.

Errr, are you guys saying that Frictional can't write a good story? OK, maybe they're not superb literary geniuses or anything, but I rather liked plots of both Penumbra and Amnesia. Better than most games out there anyway.

Agreeing with Brethren. You guys really didn't like the story in Amnesia?
I mean I guess it wasn't brilliant or anything but it was good enough to immerse me in the gameworld and made me want to know how it was gonna turn out in the end.

I liked the story too TBH. I just said that because 1. it was a throwaway joke, so I was exaggerating for the zing, but also 2. I really meant more storytelling technique than the story itself. That's supposed to be thechineseroom's added value, a special way of storytelling in FPS; the way it tells a story in the world (beyond the story itself)... So if they don't have that, it'll feel like a lost opportunity. That's what that pole represented in my mind. (And the other factor was Frictional's well known special way with in-the-world gameplay. So if they don't keep that it'll feel like a lost opportunity too, so that's the other half of the "worst of both worlds" pole.)
Then the other pole is if they have Frictional's special way with gameplay and thechineseroom's special style of storytelling together in the same game. It's like what Angel Dust said in the first place, one style fills in the open space of the other, and that's "the best of both worlds" idea. Saying it could also be the worst of both worlds is just the joking counterpart to that point.

Slavishly aping everyone's favourite xenophobic shut-in (as opposed to merely using one of his ideas and running with it, for example Mass Effect's Reapers and
especially Leviathan) is not conducive to a good, original, or interesting story.
