A homage perhaps (it deviates slightly from usual HPL norms) but not a very good one.

I think you're being kind of a picky bitch about the whole thing tbh - never heard anyone else complain about it. If it was the same exact game, but had "Call of Cthulhu" in front of it, would you still dislike it as much? Would that kind of title even be appropriate?

This comes back to my 'so long as it is well executed' argument.

Well, which game are we talking about? Eternal Darkness or one of the Frictional games?
Actually, it doesn't matter -- if a game is
clearly marked as deliberately being part of the greater Lovecraft mythos/franchise/whatever I'd be okay with it, because those games have a source material and a pre-established universe that they have to adhere to. You don't see me complaining about Dark Corners of the Earth, other than that the truck ride sucks balls.
I'm not being picky at all here. My problem is with stuff that professes to be an original setting and original story, and is basically Lovecraft with the serial numbers filed off. Sorry guys, CoC does that already, do something new please.

Maybe I haven't read enough Lovecraft but I don't see how Amnesia was a direct ripoff of it. In terms of style, well, yeah, the 'gothic horror' theme is now pretty well associated with Lovecraft. But it was well-done and AFAIK the story wasn't taken directly from any of Lovecraft's stories.

No sanity system? Hm. Kills some of the appeal for me.
