No sanity system? Color me interested.
thechineseroom. Still interested?

Not really, no, but the lack of a sanity system is an improvement. Sanity systems are bullshit.

I read the reviews on Penny Arcade Report and on The Escapist, and found the comparison/contrast amusing. They're saying it's great/awful for a variety of the exact same reasons.

It's the early part of the game, but they seem to have replaced the interactivity with long-winded, shitty writing.

Quit the game after it:
* failed to acknowledge that I wasn't picking up the phones that ring throughout the first area ;
* put no effort into making me forget it is completely linear (the doors that are locked --that is, most of them-- are covered with huge, ugly and upsetting locks) ;
* insisted on transforming what could be a nice exploration ride into a slog across too-serious prose and a series of things-that-happen without any proper context ;
* only provided me with the most basic of interactions and a few drawers here and there ;
* didn't introduce any new mechanic, instead choosing to remove the light/dark and inventory systems altogether ;
* forced me through an increasing number of scenes where the player character is supposed to be startled as the camera becomes a jittery, trailing and unresponsive mess ;
* completely failed to elicit a single scare during the first hour of playing.
On the other hand, the sound design is just perfect, and the pig imagery everywhere is a nice touch. But that's not enough.

So is Dear Esther games the only thing thechineseroom can do? Wish they would have come around the times romhacks were more popular, we'd have seen such pretty sprites, yet so little everything else. But those sprites...

Reading the reviews, it being linear & sparse on interaction was exactly what I was worried about. What kind of adventure game banks on being linear & sparse on interaction? It's like the bread & butter of the genre.
Pyrian on 11/9/2013 at 00:30
I'm confused on what you're saying, there. Isn't "bread & butter" supposed to be a good thing?
june gloom on 11/9/2013 at 01:45
I think he meant interaction and was just continuing on from the previous sentence.
I also believe he may be ill currently.
