One exception.....lets just say that I actually have the Pryo achievement you get for making somebody ragequit.
Hah, BarbequeQ? Random, but funny achievement.

Some games have better communities than others, when I still played Rainbow Six it was usually downright chivalrous. xbox live is a nightmare, ps3 slightly less so because of communication limitations.

General rule of thumb (as we all know) is that the "cooler" a game is, the worse the community. If you think it about it, the most annoying people on Xbox (Fratboys and 13 year olds) are both demographics that desperately crave "cool" due to their own ego deficiencies.

wow who'd have thought

I know its obvious, but its worth repeating because its a fundamental truth of the console world.

Aren't you just glad these people aren't ruining PC online gaming?
To tell the truth, I don't really play any online games other than CS 1.6, and since all of the berks have moved onto source or COD, I don't have this problem at all. Of course, a large portion of the people still playing 1.6 are fucking good at it, at least on the servers I play, so pwning n00bs is out of the question. Also, it's gotten to the point where people know the maps and all the exploits a little too well, which is annoying when you know you really weren't meant to have been able to get shot and killed through that wall.

The SWAT 4 community from launch until ~ the time Stetchkov Syndicate was released was pretty damn good. 80% of the players were awesome and cooperative. Even a n00b tended to ask for some advice/help/handholding instead of just running around willy-nilly, fucking it up for the rest of the team. I met some really good folks there. It eventually devolved into a slight mess as the vets moved on, but I am sure you could still dig through a few servers/forums and find a good 5-man crew. Just stay away from its version of deathmatch, it has always been chaos.
Another game I met a ton a great dudes on is FarCry. The multiplayer caught a lot of flak for no reason. It was really fun, had excellent, HUGE maps, and the weapons just rocked. I still say it was one of the better multiplayer PC games of its time. Even the clans were approachable. I found a couple big clans who were willing to share insanely clever sniping spots, exploits, and tips to a few of us who played a lot but remained unattached to a clan.
God, those were the good old days. Soldier of Fortune II, FarCry, SWAT 4, Half-Life 2 DeathMatch (severely underrated), the aforementioned Rainbow Six 3 games, Serious Sam co-op.
I can't remember the last time I logged on to an online game. It was on Xbox 1 on Live, I know that much. Probably Call of Duty 2:BR1 of CoD 3. Both had awesome online for considering the console they were on.

I agree with you on Far Cry, still fire that up at lans and play through some of the classic maps like Surf and Monkeybay. I still reckon it has the best rocket launcher in any shooter to date.

Actually, they aren't. I don't play online competitively much these days, but I actually HAVE noticed an increase in the quality of most PC game communities since the last generation of consoles was released. Of course, there are obvious exceptions such as any F2P Shooter and COD.

Yeah same, was a very friendly place for new players, they would die again and again and again but they sticked around. It was more of a chat-room with the occasional game, a match usually lasted 20 seconds or so and 10 minute of talk in between, also between competing clans nothing but fun. Got an e-mail from a french guy I played vicious 1 on 1 games with few weeks back, asked me how I was doing, must have been 8 years or so. Very good times.
