I got Doom III for the sole purpose of playing TDM. It's been more than worth it.

Yeh, but one does'nt buy a game in order to play another.
Wrong. That's exactly what I did, and I know I'm not the only one. I don't like Doom3, I do like The Dark Mod, so I bought a cheap used copy purely for the mod and it was well worth it. You're making an issue where there isn't one, and (unintentionally, I'm sure) belittling the viability of the mod, but your argument doesn't make any sense - so don't complain that others are derailing the thread. If you post such poorly thought-out comments, you should expect comeback.

I don't really think this string of discussion will go anywhere useful.
So, how about Visceral?

Same here, although I did try out Doom 3 several times, since I had it installed anyway. Each time I endured it for about 1/2 hour before I decided it was really ass. But for TDM, it was worth it.
By now, Doom 3 only costs a pittance, anyway.

To restate the obvious, you also can't play Visceral without Visceral. Longcat is long.

Was never impressed enough with the "doom" series to spend money on it.
What about being impressed with ID's support for mods?

Does this, except for the assassin part, sound familiar?''
"Visceral is a stealth-action game in a medieval/fantasy setting with steam punk elements. It takes place primarily in the city of Cressport, a dismal place rife with secrets and those who would seek control at any cost. The player assumes the role of Slater, a hired mercenary specializing in stealth assassination.
Key Features:
* The game is designed from ground up supporting both third person and first person perspective. The player can switch between two modes on the fly during the game.
* Total freedom for the player: Action oriented players will enjoy variety of both melee and ranged combat while stealth fans can accomplish the missions in total stealth, without using any weapons.
* RPG elements. Players can indulge in side-quests "if they choose to " and revive their arsenal via trading and sell artifacts and loots obtained during the missions to purchase better equipments. However, if the player prefers stealth is the only ultimate weapon for an assassin, he/she can omit side-quests altogether.
*Unique AI: Dynamic Lights and Shadow based stealth and cover system. AI will react to player movements, player's footsteps and the changes he makes in the environments.
*Rich medieval & fantasy atmosphere blended with steampunk elements, uninterrepted, vast mission areas"

Yeah, it sounds like a random mishmash of gameplay elements from every game where you could play a thief from the last ten years.
