A new Thief like game. - by BrokenArts

Ick. Looks pretty low-budget.
Also, borderline plagiarism going on, here. The medieval steampunk setting, hooded main character and the like. I don't throw that accusation around lightly, either. Thief has such a unique setting and style, it's just... the likelihood of all of those elements coming together by accident is an impossibility.

Except for that the DarkMod is for free, it's borderline plagiarism as well. Well, that's what is was supposed to be, right?
About the low budget, anyone played Mount and Blade yet, which was also made in Turkey, starting with a developing crew of six people? That's a really exciting game, no story or even voice actors whatsoever, but the horse riding itself is a lot of fun, it's easily moddable and there's a multiplayer expansion to come within the next weeks. Of course things are a little different from Thief where especially the voice acting is important and everything should be a bit more polished, but no one prevents them from making a working game or a clever story. I'm not into the assassin part, though, but they're not making my game anyway.

I bought Mount & Blade a few years ago. I haven't looked at it for quite a while, I'm aware it has progressed a lot since then - but even back at that early stage it was great, great fun and quite absorbing. It had a lethality uncommon in modern games but was still just giddily enjoyable most of the time, a tough balancing act but they nailed it. I'm glad it's still going strong (latest developments got a mention in Edge this month). I really liked their approach to payment/funding too.
Interesting point about plagiarism. Mods like TDM are homages, and while they've had to be careful, everybody knows the similarities to Thief are intentional. With Visceral, it's again quite obvious where the inspiration comes from, but because it's a commercial project they kinda have to deny it. :cheeky: Both projects come from similar origins, ie "we love Thief and want to make something that honours/improves on those games, and that the fans will enjoy" but because one's free and the other isn't, attitudes are different. Is that rational? I'm not sure.
,
I don't think Visceral is doing itself any favours by looking so much like T3 (and the 1st screenshot looks alarmingly like TDM to me, stylistically) but I'll try not to pre-judge based on looks while nothing is known about how it actually plays. The odds are against them, but if they can pull it off this might be a game I'd enjoy playing, so good luck to 'em. Hey, if the Mount & Blade team could do it...

Very good news, I diidn't know about it!
I'll wait for this game even more intensly than for Thi4f( or thief4), just because to me Visceral seems to be a game made by Thief passionates for Thief passionates and not just a product made for earning money...
Good luck!

From my understanding, Visceral is being made by folks who were more fans of Thief 3 so it makes sense that it would look more like T3. They're aiming to emulate that style and atmosphere, whereas with The Dark Mod it was our goal to carry the style and essence of Thief 1 and 2 into a modern engine.
The odds are against any project of this caliber, but at the very least they have something we didn't have during the development of Dark Mod....money. lol It's a lot easier to lure coders, artists, and sound developers when you can pay them...even if they might only have a small sum to work with. I can't tell you how many times I was cussed and laughed out of coding forums when I posted a 'volunteer' position. haha

"We are self-funded indie game development company." What self-funded indi game means?
Anyway, dammit! Another Thief's clone! In this direction, I will never stop playing...
Graphically, it looks alot amateur to me... Maybe it's a new-founded company of semi-professionists.

I think in this situation it means that the founder of the company is providing the cash....either by being financially sound, or through some form of startup grant or loan.

Some potential strangeness here…
“The player assumes the role of Slater, a hired mercenary specializing in stealth assassination”
and
“Action oriented players will enjoy variety of both melee and ranged combat while stealth fans can accomplish the missions in total stealth, without using any weapons”
I assume the developers do not consider the act of assassination itself to be un-stealthy unless a weapon is used, but what other means of killing could they be referring to? Poison would be a weapon, surely…
Dropping heavy objects on people could perhaps be construed as not using a weapon, but could it be called stealthy? The general object of the gameplay seems to be assassination, but I have a difficult time reconciling this with not using weapons… Perhaps this is only because it’s early days for them yet, and they haven’t gotten their focus quite nailed down yet.
Since the primary focus is killing, this seems destined for more combat-oriented gameplay than we’re used to in Classic Thief. But you never know …

Interesting. I'll keep an eye on it. Hopefully it is decent, as I like games like Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, Thief, and Cold War and we can never have too many games like this.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
As far as the game itself goes, however, the mish mash of features doesn't inspire confidence. We'll see.
