The story itself is a kind of easter egg. There is a lot more in it than probably most players would notice.
The writing on the wall duplicates an important part of Gwendoline's little book.
It reinforces the story that centuries ago the retreat was inhabited by the Golden Sects: the Sect of the Gold Magic, the Goldcraft, the Gold Waterlight and others. They foresaw the future that a thief would come and unintentionally prevent the birth of the Beast. They wrote helpful hints in the little book of verse, "Visionary Glimpses and Inspirations" that Gwendoline found knowing that Garrett would find and read it. This was phrophesised in the lines:
"The true is more humble,
Low-placed from a tumble.
Forgotten, forsaken,
There to be taken."
Meaning not only that truth is to be easily found in lowly places (ie, not in hard-to-acquire glossy valuables) but also the humble little book itself had taken a tumble and was forgotten, yet easily taken, not in a bank vault. This has a double meaning - see also Nurse Kindly's note (the little scrap of paper clutched by Gwendoline in the garden) "Remember that funny little book you found fallen in the dust, torn and dirty?" indicated also that Gwendoline herself originally found the book in a humble place, tumbled in the dust.
This also tells you that the true Book of Gold Magick was not the hard to get grand showpiece protected by the intricate glass dome trap but the shabby little book of verse itself. This is why Nurse Kindly wanted the book and asked that it be dropped down the laundry chute. This is the book that Lord Drakon wanted to help empower him in his incantations to corrupt the birth of Gwendoline's child so that the Beast might be brought forth. This is the little book that is taken back by the fire elemental after Drakon's death. His death is also predicted in the little book and repeated on the wall:
" Yet taken for gain
Used to acquire
Such would be slain
Consum'ed in fire."
Obvious really! ;)

Do you have an extra/enhanced texture pack installed? [if so, remove it while playing Night Watch.] Other than that the only thing I can suggest is use Ctrl + Alt + End to jump to the next level. If it doesn't work from your latest gamesave, restart the first mission and use it immediately. If that doesn't work I'm sure the later levels can be jumped to by tweaking files (though I'm rusty on that at the moment.)

This link is dead, can someone link a walkthrough for this FM? I've started playing, but I can tell already I'm going to need to refer back here a lot (like I did with King's Story).

Thanks, that will definitely save me some time! This forum should really consider adding a "like" button.

I'm playing this one again. Obviously had no trouble last time, but now, in Mission 1, I am at the part where you have to shoot the elevator buttons through the grate. Neither will do anything.

I had the same problem some days ago, in the end, after many tries,
I used a rope arrow.
