Did I mention that I ran into the SAME problem with the game being too dark when I installed Thief 2 on my moms computer? I couldn't see Basso or... much of anything for that matter except for the brightly lit exit behind me. I payed little attention to the mission or objectives because at this stage I was just testing to make sure it ran ok on the computer. While messing around, I cycled through my inventory, used the bird whistle thingy, and got that nice sound effect for completing an objective (even though I had no idea what was going on). A few minutes later, I got the "Mission Complete" screen. Ok, I don't know HOW Basso got past those guards, and I guess I will have to test it later but whatever.
Then I found myself on the second mission but, given how dark it was, I could only see the moonlit sky. Basically, had to do the same work around with (at the time) Thief DP.

First time I played Thief was on a demo disk that had a bunch of other games like FF7 and Tomb Raider on it. I didn't decide to play Thief until much later, long after I exhausted all the other games on the disk.
When I fired up that game, I was at first rather unimpressed with the training mission. Washed-out graphics and no music? But when I spawned right outside the well leading to Bafford's manor, I was blown away by one thing: the atmosphere. It was compelling and was unlike anything I ever felt before.
I actually took the stealth suggestion seriously my first time through, but because the concept behind Thief was so new to me, I still tried to kill eveything that moved, though I did so without causing too much trouble for myself. That meant using the bow a lot. So if anything, I felt more like an assassin than a thief. Blame Doom and Wolfenstein. They drilled the idea into your head that anything other than YOU that was moving must be destroyed.
The turning point came when I decided that I wanted to kill EVERYONE, even the innocents. So the first thing to do was take care of the sleeping servant. But I wanted to save my arrows so I approached him with my sword drawn. But the bastard shot straight out of his bed and nervously asked me who I was before running away. So I blocked his escape while delivering crushing blows with my sword. And his death scream got to me. I felt a little bad. But I ignored this feeling and continued on into the kitchen where I launched an arrow straight into the back of the unsuspecting cook, who let out a similiar scream (I avoided the kitchen in previous sessions). Then I realized what I was doing. I was killing people. What had I become? Thief was a revolutionary game for its time in that the FPS principle of mercilessly reducing people into crumpled heaps (whether recognizable or not) did not apply here. That was the day, friends, when I became a Thief. And it's pretty much downhill from there. Going totally stealthy and undetected makes you feel more powerful than any murderous rampage can. It's almost a god-like feeling--you can always say that if that guard is alive, it's because you let him live, not because he wants to.

I got it playing from my Bro. Like i've said in previous topics (probably dead topics already), i've never really played Thief I, just remember a bit of "Lord Baffords Manor" outside and the blackjack and how my bro told his friend or someone elsee, what you must really do in this game.
I'm with Thief II, however. I remember best the mission "Masks" (anybody know why?) and 5th mission, which name i am not aware of yet. I liked hiding over the wooden ledges In "Masks" upper floors and the secret floor aswell, i guess. Hiding above the enemy in a complete dark i very much liked. Maybe because i felt most safe there :). And i played on expert that mission, so i couldn't rid of guards, what i did in other missions as much as i could :D.
I very much liked Syndef's post: The guards aren't dead, because i left them alive, not because i couldn't take them. Being undetected in no need to kill anyone is indeed a genius mastermind feeling.

By the way, is there a specific term for killing yourself in Thief 1/Gold by crashing into walls while bunny hopping?:p
Since I learned the technique from Thumper, I call it getting Thumped. In game it works like this:
"Almost...there...one...more...jum...OH SH*T! I just thumped myself."

nostalgia moments... Scariest sound effects :o in all TDP missions.

Aah, I spent *so* much time playing thief in every way anybody could think of :) Loved it from the moement I tried the demo. Hated ThC - it was just too difficult, so I put TDP away for two month... All that wasted time spent on the Silent Project... Thief has changed my style of playing forever; I don't play games anymore that don't allow to knock out your opponents...

I was introduced to Thief by the Thief Gold demo. I too could not get past the 3 guards. I kept sending noisemakers out and the guards would eventually find me because I sucked at moving. I dropped the game and didn't play it again until some time later when I uncovered it in a pile of old games. I installed it and played, and fell in love with it.

spoilers.
I still remember the first time I played RTC. It was in the middle of the night with the lights out. When I sneaked up and grabbed the eye, it really freaked me out when all of the undead became alert. I remember going back to the stairwell to try and escape, but they were there waiting for me... so I returned to the opposite side of the building and they followed me there too even though I remained mostly in shadows. It made me feel as though they were closing in on me... It was totally cool! The layout of RTC was very impressive, with the wind tunnels, the basement and all. The one complaint I have with the mission is that in some areas there is clearly light but no visible light source... for example the bathroom in the basement. Perhaps I am nitpicking, but when I see light shining on the wall from no visible light source it just breaks the immersion a bit. That said, I still go back and play RTC on occasion in expert mode.

Pretend it's as supernatural as all the other supernatural elements of that mission.:cheeky:
