I agree with jtr, it's less about the legality (though the law is still important) and more about having a shred of moral fiber. If Looking Glass was still around and politely asked that it not be done, then how many of you would still rooting for it? So offer Eidos the same respect you'd give to LG, just don't do it.
@his-lawfully-evilness-van HellSing- The one thing which makes the textures ok is that Eidos is fine with them. If Eidos were to (God forbid) go on the record stating that the use of the textures was unacceptable then it would be the solemn duty of The Circle to stop hosting it and those of us who have it should uninstall it.

We've been given a great deal of leeway, and I'm not surprised it's never enough for some. Give an inch/take mile. Fargin' greedy bastages.

Why don't you just ask for some good help to get it running again instead? If it worked at one time it should work again! I'm sure many here would be glad to help you including me. :cheeky:

Just to show a different POV:
It can be good for publicity.
Making TDP more accessible for everyone will make them more interested in Thief and therefore more likely to buy Thief 4.
Besides if we argue about limit of use of software then surely that cool Thief Multiplayer Mod falls into it.
And The Dark Mod ? They avoid using Thief names. But similarity in gameplay, setting, items and ennemies could be used against them.
Does the multiplayer mod or the Dark Mod hurt Eidos IP? No, they help it. Thief gains more publicity. It doesn´t become obscure. Attracts new gamers. Etc.

Okay, edited, but PotatoGuy still has a quote of a part of my originals. ;)
Doesn't change the fact that I'm a bit of an evil bastard anyway.

Just this one time I will be nice to you and edit my post.

Yes, but these projects are likely to encourage people to buy Thief 1/2. The point here is that if you transfer Thief 1 to Thief 2, no-one will buy Thief 1. It doesn't help it gain new publicity or attract new gamers, it does the exact opposite, which is precisely why this should be a big no-no from a legal and moral point of view.
Of course, if someone translates the missions on their own computer for their own personal use, who's to stop them? It's making it available for the general public, and potential customers of the Thief series, that would be wrong.
As for converting them somehow so you needed both games to play them, you're entering an even greyer area, but in theory this would be ok, because it's not hurting sales, and it's helping people play the game who maybe can't get it to run. In that respect, it's similar to DDFix. However, the practicalities of converting Thief 1 missions to Thief 2, while still requiring a valid copy of Thief 1, and not making it super-easy to bypass that requirement, pretty much invalidate that argument anyway.

Wouldn't it be possible to make a guide only telling you how to transfer the levels that are already installed on your computer, because it's still possible to install Gold, just not run it for some people, right?
As long as there's no links to the levels themselves, it should be fine. Unless I'm totally wrong.

It won't play. It will crash. :sly:
The engine versions are modified to the point they are no longer compatible.
One cannot open TDP/Gold missions in the TMA engine without strangling the engine. It's a lot of work, and only some things can be moved over, while other things have to be rebuilt, and it's not worth the effort, and no one has done it but for a small number of missions, but that's it.

To get back to the original problem: in my experience, one possible reason might be that DarkLoader was installed, but when a popup window in it asked if it should 'optimize' the... something, the user answered no. Without the optimization, Gold (and maybe DP) FMs won't work. If this is the case, than it should be sufficient to open the Setttings menu inside DarkLoader than closing it - a popup should appear asking about optimization.
