This one aspect so far is making this game very frustrating. The first mission! I've gotten turned around I don't know how many times. Not a great first impression...

I'm sorry you're frustrated, but try to stick with it as these missions are worth it.
Try to dilligently use your compass and your map while paying attention to landmarks and street names. I know it's more difficult then with the OMs, but if you're patient about it, keeping your bearings in these maps can be part of the fun.

Auto maps are nice at times but so far I'm up to mission 7 and I haven't had too much trouble figuring out where I am on the map. Even with auto maps sometimes there are areas that aren't even on a map and that's part of the game play fun. It is difficult at times to figure out where you are in large mansions but reading door plaques then referring to a map often helps. So far there is only one thing in the campaign that bugs me and that is alarm systems that turn back on after a specified amount of time. :p

My favourite part of Thief is that the maps are mud maps (might be an Australian thing). A rough, not to scale, scribble that includes essential features.
I struggled with the lower tombs for a while, particularly when moving between areas not shown but once it clicked the maps are more than adequate for navigation.

Yeah, those are fun.... It helps to sketch out those maps on paper then add your own bits as you work your way through. You can cheat and open a mission map in Dromed too! :joke:

Oh, I definitely will go back, and I know I need to adjust my thinking around it. This probably just shows the limitations of my navigational and 3-dimensional cognitive abilities, and I've been a FedEx courier! Lol? It certainly is amazing, heartwarming, just plain awesome to see such a fan-made endeavor for an "old" game. Just shows how good the games are. I myself am feeling old, and it's been just about 20 years since I first played The Dark Project.
