My room mate has published a novel. He's not a member here, but we're both Thief fans and that was one of the chief inspirations for him to write a book about stealth. So I figured I'd let you guys know about it. Other inspirations were his study of martial arts, and an article about the Supermax prison. I really enjoyed reading this, and I hope a few of you do as well.
Title: Khan in Rasputin's Shadow
I'll give you a short synopsis:
It's a thriller set in modern times. Two individuals (code-named), Khan, an ex-special forces soldier, and Rasputin, a trained survivalist, tracker, and sneak, are hired to infiltrate ADX, also known as Supermax, a prison in Colorado that is regarded as the most secure prison in the world. Their objective is to retrieve one of the prisoners.

Wait, so someone has to be published by the "in" crowd to impress you? It's not good enough to try and get your start in the world by investing the time it takes to write a 800 page novel, THEN invest your own hard earned money to share it with the world, and THEN invest more time to talk to reviewers/critics/bookstore owners etc... etc... No, it only counts when it has the official "stamp" eh?
Wait, who's the vain one here?
You do realize publishing companies accept manuscripts mostly based on reputation and who you know, right? So how does one go about gaining said reputation and meeting said agents and editors? Maybe, writing books and getting them out there?
NAAWWWW! I'll be sure to give that advice to my room mate, that he shouldn't work so hard to get his book out there and that he should instead hope and pray to win the "publishing company lottery".
Read the book before you're so quick to toss out such judgmental tosh. Then come to me with your complaints. Or perhaps you could write your own book and get it published, maybe then your opinion would hold a little salt. Good day, sir.

Yup. That's why agents and editors exist--quality control. It's not to say that the book is bad (never said that), but if it's 800 pages long then it probably would/could have benefited from a good editor taking a whack at it to help trim out the fat.
But now we get to circumvent that whole process thanks to the numerous self-publishing "publishers". Now, I'm not going to say that there aren't any really good books available from these places, but the shear amount of ones that aren't lend little credibility to them. Thus, once again, having an agent or an editor help out with the process is a good thing just for the credibility factor. It's like American Idol, everyone thinks they can sing--but the ones that are truly awful do not take the time to invest in a singing coach to help them smooth out the rough areas in their voice (editors and agents).
Now, couple that with knowing that usually these self-publishing houses are the only ones truly making money (if they weren't why would they exist), though they make it sound so enticing, you need to really make sure you are realistic about your prospects of making much profit. I have a friend who lost his house and wife by "investing" in his self-published book.
Truly, I do hope he does well. That message was lost in my attempt to poke some fun at myself, and the whole "publish-it-yourself-and-find-riches" industry.
... apparently, no one else remembers previous threads (like the one where Stitch and Kolya slapped me around for being a "literary-snob"? Jesus, I can't even make a joke directed at myself without someone being indignant.

Thief13x-- Does this thread belong in Thief Gen, for that matter?

Queue you are a cynical man. Thief Gen is for things that are related to Thief however tenuously...I think stealth novels certainly have a place here. I am a Mod and what I think counts! So there! :p
But, srsly, guys...congrats to your friend.
Queue you know I love you...but behave over here. OK? Don't make me have to spank you again!:ebil:
