There's one thing which I personally find completely unacceptable in an FM: dead babies. Or ghost babies, or any other kind of baby that's suffering or in pain. There is a number of FMs which uses these as cheap, gratuitous shock-thrills and I've left all of them unfinished. This encompasses dead babies in visible, audible or readable formats, and if someone introduces them in a FROBBABLE format I hope they get banned for (from?) life.

What about Laurel from The Cradle? Not a baby but a child nonetheless.
I think this is subjective to the way the story is told. If an FM auther uses the suffering of a baby or a child as a way to create a cheap shock then I'm more offended by the FMAs lazy story telling than the actual content. If its done in a way where the FMA is trying to tell a story then I dont think they should be punished. Eg Laurel in the Cradle. I do feel sorry for her but using a child as a victim to a monster like the Grey Lady is a great way to make fear resonate with our inner child. The world is never a scarier place then when you are a child and monsters still exist.
Of course if this is just something that you just do not enjoy then that is completely fine. I do not think FMAs should be punished though. I think punishment should be reserved for the monsters who inflict suffering and pain on to children in real life.

Unfortunately in real life babies happen to die, get kidnapped, or even killed. I don't see the problem to put such a baby in an FM, if the plot requires it.

How fortunate for you then that in the historical period on which Thief is loosely based, infant mortality was a complete non-issue.

The missions you mention are a good start. You should play Calendra's Cistern before Calendra's Legacy, though (and
maybe Autumn in Lampfire Hills before Calendra's Cistern).
... But keep in mind that Calendra's Legacy is much harder than OM and most of FMs, so maybe it's not so good for a start ;)
As for recommendations, this is as good place as any: (

the fannon (and even the cannon a bit) agree that he's not a murderer, and in fact is rarely seen so he never needs to draw his sword anyway

But yeah, sending Garrett on a killing spree isn't really a good idea.
And I agree with your other points, very well put.

I've yet to see an FM that just assumes Garrett is a deranged psychopath who gives everyone a broadhead to the face (though it would jive well with how every friend I've ever attempted to introduce to Thief plays the game).
Does beheading count? :p
There are many early FMs with the objectives to kill someone. And many FMs that are almost impossible to sneak through and force player to shed blood on numerous occasions (or run like hell howling with frustration).
As for the original question: I'd say go on with whatever you like, but make sure you know what you're doing! Personally I don't like missions that really disregard the lore (adding advanced technologies, needless deities etc) or the character (making Garrett carrying a love letter or destroy the world he spend three games on saving). But it largely depends on what one consider to be a canon and how well something is implemented into a mission. Sometimes good writing may save even the most disastrous idea and bad writing (or a lack of thereof) - ruin even the most carefully crafted mission.

Maybe. Although sometimes nothing is more memorable than something on extreme difficulty. You finally finish and you feel like having accomplished something. :D
