Why can't you jump in moving elevators in video games?
This happens in most first person games, I've noticed. I was just wondering what the reason is.

Jumping on elevators would break the universe and cause dogs and cats to sleep together.

Hot.

So hot.

It's because Cliffy B's no longer making videogames. In Unreal Tournament, if you jumped in an elevator you'd jump higher, FUCK DA!

Not wishing to kill the vibe, but I probably will...
In old FPSs you could. I think with the advent of detailed and global physics middleware like Havok, it's probably hard enough to deal with making the lift move full stop (since it clearly uses fakery not physics to actually move), without the player jumping around and inviting all sorts of interesting bugs. So they craft the lifts into sort of physics free spaces and turn off jump so you don't get yourself into trouble.
(I don't actually know for sure, but this explanation seems like something I've heard somewhere)

As has been said, elevators boost your jumping ability in the Unreal engine.
Other games sometimes get you stuck in the moving platform and/or deal massive damage upon landing due to poor collision detection/simulated physics.

It's for realism I reckon. Who the fuck jumps in an elevator in real life? That's like tempting fate.

I don't think I've ever played an FPS where you can't jump on elevators. What a weird question.

Every time you jump in an elevator, god kills a kitten...
On a serious note, I can only remember one or two instances where you couldn't jump, most game I seem to recall being able to. Which one are you referring to?
In my game, there are no elevators, so you can theoretically not do anything in them you'd ever want! The player most definitely CAN not jump in the non-elevator, he can not perform any action they don't want, and on one occasion, by pure chance, I was also able to lure three guards into the elevtor shaft that I don't have and not watch them run around in confusion as I sneaked away! I wish I hadn't not taken a video of that, oh what a funny and emergent-gameplay moment it wasn't!
