a tip if you plan to remove darkloader,to use fmsel
be sure to open darkloader and load up one of the regular games before removing darkloader or it will keep certain files that can alter all fms you play after that
for example i had to re-get darkloader cause i removed it after playing the mission where you use a frying pan as a blackjack without clearing the mission on dark loader,so every fm i played after that had that massive frying pan forced on me in all fan missions
depending on what item is ,would be interesting if it could replace normal sword for one of those cool ones,i might have to test it and update post later
but if you want the pure experience ,be sure to reinstall on of the original games on darkloader before removing it
hope that helps someone

They work entirely differently, and FMSel creates a fresh new install folder for each FM, so I'm not sure how not doing that could corrupt future FM plays, but in any event what you suggest is a good idea regardless since you want to revert to original Thief if you're not going to use Darkloader any more.

test it yandros ,for my comp it did affect it "frying pan" maybe its only certain files,i got no idea as i am not tech savy, but all fixed now when i regot dark loader and reinstalled it and then reverted back to t2 i got my classic black jack back

yeps, just letting people know if they do decide to toss it as fmsel is superior ,i want to be sure they restore original thief game on the dark loader before they remove it

Why exactly is Fmsel superior? I've never used it but I've always loved Darkloader and never had any issues with it. What would be a reason for me not to use Darkloader anymore?

I wouldn't really say that Fmsel is superior, but it can do at least one thing that Darkloader can't. Fmsel has the ability to read the FM.cfg file. This is useful in order for some FMs to work correctly.
Ex: The author creates there FM with the new_mantle code enabled, but the player may have it disabled on their PC for some reason.
...or does Darkloader put it in too. :erg:
I haven't tested this yet.

FMSel creates a folder for each FM. This is the superior system - compared to DL - since it doesn't leave a mess in the installation folder. For authors, it's the super-superior system, anyway.

Furthermore, FMSel most likely still is in active development, together with NewDark, while Darkloader has not been updated for a long time. And then, FMSel can install more than one FM simultaneously, which can be very beneficial if one regularly switches between two or more FMs which are hundreds of megabytes in size.
There are only a few special situations where Darkloader still has some benefits compared to FMSel, but I don't think many of them are relevant for players.

Very unlikely. New_mantle is a feature introduced with NewDark, and Darkloader development stopped some time before NewDark came up. And, by the way, does FMSel actually activate new_mantle under any circumstances if the player disabled it in his/her configuration files? I don't think so.

I agree. That is one of the reasons why I've stop testing my FMs with Darkloader. But I wouldn't want it to go away. There are a group of people that are still using it for the OldDark versions with Multiplayer.

Actually, you can use it to do that. I've tested it.

Another advantage that Darkloader has is in those situations like with Chalice of Souls and Wooden Box where downloading extra custom script files isn't necessary.
