I have a 7900GT vid card and an X2 3800+ processor and am trying to play Thief Gold. I have it installed, I downloaded the D3D patch, I neutralized one of the processors with the taskmanager, but I can't play the game in Hardware mode. This makes the graphics suck. I can play the game with video hardware off and audio hardware off, but it crashes instantly with video hardware turned on. What gives?
I can play Thief II with no problems.

sounds like you're dealing with a video card problem. i doubt it's a processor issue.
what drivers are you using?
szlash280z on 25/8/2006 at 11:23
drivers are 91.31 from june of '06

try rolling back as far as you can. newer drivers are never exactly the best things ever.

hmmm... any recommendations as to how far back I should go?
I checked the Nvidia archives and found some pretty old drivers. I have 45.33 and 28.34 downloading right now. I wonder if they will work with my card? Guess I'll find out. I hope it works. I've never been able to play Thief 1 with good looking graphics. The only time I played it all the way through was on software mode. Even with sucky graphics that game still kicked more a$$ than most games I've ever played.

i doubt you can go back too far, but the 77.77 drivers gave me no trouble.

ok, the really old drivers didn't work at all. With those installed my card doesn't work properly and I don't even have the option of turning on hardware mode in the game. I have 77.77 and 77.72 downloading now. Hopefully those will work.

well, 77.77 and the other one won't even pretend to install with my videocard. going to try 78.01. It's not looking too good right now.
edit: nope. 78.01 no workie either. 81.85? lets see.
edit: nope. 81.85, 81.94 don't work either. Damn you 7900GT! What good is a videocard that can play all the new games at maximum graphical settings without slowdown if it can't even play one of the greatest games of all time???
YES! SUCCESS! Dethtoll, I thank you for the suggestion. I was able to find a driver that would actually install and allow me to run Thief Gold with my GeForce 7900GT Videocard! I must have downloaded about 12 different driver revisions before I found the one that worked. Driver number 84.21 is the earliest drivers that I was actually able to install with my 7900 and they allow me to play the game with hardware turned on. COOL! Now If only someone was to remake the game in it's entirety using the source engine...

hell, i'd be happy with a direct port to something like the Q3 engine or something.
wasn't someone porting thief to darkplaces?
