About "taffer".... - by DreadLord

Well since English isn´t my first language it´s quite hard for me to understand this word.
I know that it is a word which had been invented for the game but are there any real words which sound similiar and/or have similiar meanings?
Should it remind to "tough" ?
For English-speaking people: When they hear "taffer" the first time do they immediatly understand what it means because it reminds them to some other word?
(I think the word means "trickster", "bastard", "looser" all in one..)
The reason why I ask is that I want to "invent" a similiar word for my own language.... which should create the same "feeling"......

There was some discussion a while back about 'Taffer' possibly being based on some Welsh word, or poem, or something like that. As far as I know though, a member of Looking Glass just came up with it during production.
Anwyays, 'Taffer' is a bastardization of the name 'Trickster', much like how 'Jeez' is of 'Jesus'. It means something to the effect of fool, idiot. It can also be said in different ways -
Taffer - "Some taffer spilt mead all over this rug!"
Taff - "Taff it all, how am I gonna report this to the Captain?"
Taffing - "Quit taffing around and fight me!"
Of course, my friend has argued that its actually just means the F word, but instead of using it, Looking Glass cleverly disguised it as something else :p

There's been quite a bit of discussion over time as to the origin of 'taffer' - just search for 'taffer' on the forums and prepare to catch your jaw as it drops.
Among the older discussions, we have (

And a huge list by Grundbegriff dating from 2001 (

(most of the links are now broken, but you could search for the thread's title)
There's been plenty of thought given to the issue since. Search and ye shall find it :thumb:

And all this time I thought *I* was hardcore.

Hehe I like the idea... Really! How about a tafferism-dicitionary? That would really be cool. The word taffer in all languages :joke: :thumb:

Or even better, don't. Whoever wrote that definition was clueless.

I thought it was a pretty accurate definition, ZB. Unless, of course, you have a better one..........

The Dark Engine got its name from Thief's original name, "Dark Camelot", not because "its dark lol".
I have never seen any in-game evidence that "taffer" was derived from "trickster".
