Those who foolishly still believe that there will be fundamental congruity between the two separate universes, will be eating crow come February 25th.
Actually, if it turns out that it really is completely unrelated and they really have thrown out most of the stuff from the originals the people who thought there was any "fundamental congruity" will go "oh, they've take this direction". And that's it.
You and your crew will be the only people that it really matters to.

I think their strategy is to replace the original franchise (hence why they presumptuously call their reboot "Thief", and not "Thief - something"), whose legacy they don't seem to care for; but they value the overall
Thief concept for gaming, so they're remaking it. This will be confirmed if after this one they decide to make a "Thief 2"
Yeah, I agree...EM is attempting to displace the THIEF Universe with a NuVerse.

Actually, I would say that most THIEF fans would rather have experienced the next game in the consistent, classic universe...so you're in the minority here.

No, I'd rather it was a proper LGS sequel.
What I don't care about it's how many of my predictions are correct.

Maybe I'm being too hopeful that these are more than just nods to the original series. Will have to wait and see to know for sure.

while robbing an opium den/bordello, he stumbles upon an artifact that gives him opium-powered abilities such as faster reflexes. Or at least something like that, if I remember correctly.
It is pretty interesting the location where he finds this artifact.

we're just defending the description of it as a "reboot/sequel."
Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out what that is, because to me they are mutually exclusive.
What specifically do you think makes something a "reboot/sequel" and not just a sequel or just a reboot? I'm curious to know.

A sequel follows the main story. A reboot wipes it all out. A sequel/reboot follows whatever it wants from the past, and throws out/re-arranges anything else left in the vast wake of the carnage and outright destruction. Much like a mangled corpse of rotted flesh, dancing hopelessly over the eternal bonfire of mediocrity.

So does Thiefgen run on hyperbole or what?

Plus most of their target audience (the new generation of fans) probably won't even know the game is part of a franchise - they'll assume NuThief is Thief, and I think that's part of EM's strategy
