Advice for newbie? - TTLG Forums

Hello all

I have just finished playing all the Dark Mod FMs and only recently learned that similar FMs were available for the Thief games. I would like to play some, but am a bit overwhelmed by the shear number of missions.

I have looked through these forums for advice, but beyond the FAQ, haven't found much. Can anybody point me in the direction of existing advice for new players or provide some? Specifically, how to decide which missions to play and which one(s) to start with and the order to play them in.

Any advice gratefully received.

My advise is not to play all the best missions first, as it's wonderfully satisfying to discover the gems as you work your way through the mountain of missions available. Having said that of course you'll want to play some of the best and there is one main thread that will help you find those.

I would also advise to play older fms first. After playing newer ones you may be disappointed by them, cause there was a huge development especially in the last few years.

I'm myself feeling a bit lost when it comes to thieving recently: what I mean by that is that recent years (7-8) I've seldom if ever played any missions, just due to being busy with school etc. I still like Thief a lot, but I think some of that youthful "spark" is gone.. could it have anything to do with being too old, I don't know :/ Suggestions, similar thoughts, anyone? I'm 29 already and I can't even recall when I played Thief for the 1st time, but yeah I think life just takes its time..

I'd go in a basically chronological order if you think you'll really want to play a serious amount of them. (www.thiefmissions.com)
would be the place to start for stuff up to about 2013. Check under authors to make sure you don't play any campaign FM's out of order or if you just want to see how their work progresses from mission to mission. That way you'll also get a real feel for how the art of the fan mission developed and why some even took it so far as to create TDM which you've enjoyed no doubt. Relax and enjoy. You've got a good 10-15 years of thieving to look forward to. See you in 2027. :cool:

I wouldn't recommend Thiefmissions.com, its missing many recent mission and alot of missions there are outdated, instead i recommend this site "Taffer's paradise"which is always update:

Also make sure you install NEwDark 1.25 in order to run all missions and be able to run on your pc:

That is NewDarkLoader - and technically quite different from Darkloader. The former is quite an alternative to FM-Selector (built-in into Thief NewDark), the latter is outdated and IMHO merely suitable for old Thief installations without NewDark.

It's also very much easier and better to patch your Thief games with either (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106) tafferpatch for T2 or (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) TFix for T1/TG as these 2 patches also contain all the upto date scripts, have many in-built fixes for some of the older missions and get almost every modern computer to run smoothly, none of which the Newdark patch does on it's own.
