Age of Decadence is an upcoming role-playing game with emphasis of non-linearity, multiple playthroughs, and role-playing options. A diplomatic path through the game is as viable as a combat one, and starting backgrounds include professions like grifter, merchant, thief, and mercenary.
Combat in this game is just one of the many ways to reach your goals. However, the developers wanted it to be as good as possible so they released a demo showcasing it to gather feedback from gamers.
Here's a link to a list of hosts from which you can download it:

And here is the survival guide. The combat system is turn-based and features different kinds of weapon and armor types that all have their tactical advantages and disadvantages:

probably more fun than the screenshot would have you believe but that grid is atrocious, you'd think people trying to recreate the Fallout-era of RPGs and all the supposed atmosphere that might entail would pick something a little less eye-raping/jarring

Ah yes this is the game I was recently searching for but could not remember the name of. Good to see it is still coming along.

Is this the one where the developer infamously raged against modern RPG developers and players? I'll check it out.

Yes, that's the one. I'm probably going to skip this; if the childish ranting of the developer doesn't kill it for me, the fantasy aspect will. But it's good to see them make progress.

This game is too hard for dethtoll anyway.

Hahaha what? You're certainly living up to your name.

OLOL HE SED YUR DUM!
Well, I played it. Pretty neat. The interface and resetting camera angles make for an awkward as hell experience, but the combat has enough depth to it to make up for that shortcoming. If the adventuring sections have as much meat on it as the combat, it might be worth grabbing.
Might be. I want a proper demo before I decide.

I played an early beta of this and was not overly impressed. It played more like an unpolished mod, with terrible animations and a contrived theme and storyline. It would take me a fair bit of convincing to splash out any money on this...

I think the grid works better in-game. It stands out in screenshots.

Yes. Although the lead developer is actually more considerate than people think. He is also very welcoming of hard criticism of his game and has defended Fallout 3 and Dragon Age against the hard core RPG community.

Really? I thought that the UI and the camera work much better than in other recent point-and-click RPGs (haven't played Drakensang though). NWN2 and Dragon Age both have horrible camera and player character controls. Also, item and ability icons in those games (as well as in games like Oblivion and Morrowind) have long since ceased being recognizable. In this respect Age of Decadence is much better, IMO.

There will be, once the game is released. It's shareware and you can play through the first town with the seven different starting backgrounds. :)

The team has fixed the crashing and the bugs so the demo is quite polished now. What do you mean by "contrived theme and storyline"? I don't think "search for a forgotten temple in a post-apocalyptic world" is any more contrived than what's in other RPGs. Besides, there is barely any story to speak of in the combat demo; it's mostly about advancing in the gladiator arena. Only at the end of the demo is there a short sequence that hints at the storyline of the game itself.
