First, the laser sight: in DX1, I hate to say it, but it had very few uses. This is because of the simple reason that you couldn't quite see the red dot when it mattered. Either because the dot was to small or the crosshairs were in the way.
This brings me to both my suggestions:
Make the laser sight visible, all the way down the line. Like if you turned on a laser pointer in a steam room. Unrealistic, yes. But at least it's useful. I saw this done in Metal Gear Solid 2 and it worked fine. As for bad guys seeing the line and finding you, I don't care either way. Although I would probably say no.
Make the crosshairs optionally transulucent (faded), and with different levels of translucency. This wasn't my idea, but it's a good one.

I'm not sure about this .. but I think it's possible to disable the crosshairs somewhere in the menu. This sure makes the game way harder and you'd be grateful for having at least the laser sight then. But, of course, the laser sight would only make sense with the crosshairs disabled, for they don't offer any additional aiming help.<br />DX2 generally without crosshairs .. that'd bee cool + realistic <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> but maybe the game'd be too hard then.<br />Dunno..

I can see this being possible in 3rd person<br />games(like metal gear), but how would this be done in a 1st person game like deus ex?

I hope they enable some function in which the laser sight is always on when placed on a certain weapon.
For example: From my understanding, the laser sight increases accuracy so that the bullet always hits the red dot. However, whenever I take out my pistol, I forget to put on the laser sight, and am not able to use it. A laser sight isn't that distracting, so I hope for DX2 they don't have a laser sight on/off button, it's just on all the time.
(but this could be a problem if they decide to have enemies notice the laser sight)

umm...the laser sight was really meant to only be used with the sniper rifle. The scope magnifies the laser making the rifle, easily the most dangerous weapon in the game. <img src="graemlins/thumb.gif" border="0" alt="[Thumbs Up!]" />

An option enabling us to DISABLE the EFF function would have ben extremely nice. I hated using the laser sight when aiming at an enemy and seeing those EFF reticles show up. By the time you're partway through the game, you don't need the EFF to tell you what it is you're looking at anyhow. You already know.

The laser sight is a godsend at the earlier parts. If used on a weapon with no scope, it makes it 100% accurate. The bullet goes where the dot is. Even if you're at "Untrained" with no accuracy mods (note: you still have to deal with recoil). This is especially deadly when combined with level 4 targeting aug; you can snipe with the assault rifle, or my favorite, snipe with my un-scoped laser sighted pistol. Putting a scope on the weapon ruins this (even with the laser on, it's no more accurate then without--bullets go any which way). If your laser sight isn't doing anything, I would bet you've got a scope on it as well.
Personally, I would love for enemies to detect you from the laser sight. Realism is good. Of course, this would take a lot of AI work; getting them to detect the laser isn't a problem, but making it realistic, where they're not sure where it's originating from and have to look around, is probably a difficult problem.

I will agree with Phydeaux about the laser sight, I love putting the one you get in liberty island on my pistol and knocking them off one by from unheard of distances! while running! (up until like my fourth run of the game i dint realize the usefulness of the laser) Also, i havent really tested this much, only a little in A51 but i think with scoped weapons, you still have 100% accuarcy, but only when the scope is enabled.

I always thought, while the laster sight was a great tool, it could be more realistic. Not just the AI awareness of it, but the accuracy. In real life, the laser just draws a straight line originating from the gun. Now, if the gun is wobbling, so should the laser's dot, right? If at untrained your hand(s) is unsteady and your aim is wavering, the laser should follow suit. Pick up a pocket-pointer laser and try and keep it in the exact same point at 100 feet and you'll see what I mean. In the game, you would see the same thing. Your hand might look relativly motionless, but your aim is off. Using a laser sight should tell you exactly where your aim is wandering, allowing you to make the shot when the laser crosses your target.
Sorry if this is gibberish, I haven't had much sleep when writing this.
