I don't know why some people are disgusted by the thought of eating bugs.
You are a terrible liar.

SE, those look like deep fried soft shelled crabs, which
look marginally tasty but are in actuality insanely good. Doesn't change the fact they look like deep fried spider aliens.
This is what gets me though - I luuurve fried soft-shell crab and when I see it I
don't think it looks like spider aliens, I think it looks like tasty soft shell crab.
It's all a matter of perception. If you were starving (and I mean seriously food deprived) and were served it I bet "spider aliens" would be the last thing on your mind.
Hey, I'm not saying that you're wrong about what it looks like though. I've only started eating seafood in the last 8 years or so and now it's amongst my favourite food types. I remember having whole lobster for the first time and finding even touching the spiny shell weird and a little off putting. And the first time we got live lobster back home.
Shudders.Now? Bring it on.
It's all perception and multiculturalism/cosmopolitanism is going a ways to breaking down barriers. There are still so, so many white English people I meet who express disgust at a whole range of food though, and I know it's because they've been brought up on nicely packed food that doesn't look anything like what it came from.

I think you're onto something with the "looks like what it came" from bit. But there must be something more that makes insects seem instinctively repulsive. I mean I wouldn't be keen on mashed grasshopper pie, even if didn't have any apparent legs, wings or twitching antennae.

I've met/known a surprising number of people who won't eat chicken if it's on the bone, or if they'll have to handle it raw first, or fish if there is any chance of encountering a bone.
It's like they want to eat it, like the taste and the texture as long as they can't link it to it's origin.
Sulphur on 28/1/2011 at 19:25
I'm one of those people. I don't really care about its origin, but chowing down on a piece of succulent flesh and having a bone angle into your teeth/jaw/palate (ow) from out of nowhere is like a fundamental disconnect with the pleasure principle.
I can just about stand KFC and chicken wings, but the pure cognitive dissonance of having to tear the flesh off of bones with your teeth isn't something I can take in large quantities. It's a personal preference that everything I have on my plate ought to be edible; having my teeth grind into something solid and unchewable just makes the entire damn thing unpalatable.
I also dislike seafood to an extremely large extent, but that's probably because I've grown up by the coast and am pretty sick and tired of fish. There's also the bone equation to consider there. Kebabs and fillets, though? Bring 'em on.

Innocence is definitely bliss where eating insects is concerned. I can live with the fact that the odd egg or carapace sneaks into my tomato puree so long as I don't notice it.
On topic, I'd love to be able to relay my own experiences of dining at Taco Bell, but sadly the gods have decreed that the joys of Mexican-style fast food are to be denied to us in the UK, so instead here is an image of the nachos and veggie chilli I had for dinner yesterday :D

At least they'll fit on the bun.

When I was teaching in Korea, I'd often stop by the same restaurant walking home from work for dinner, and since I couldn't read a word of Hangul I'd just pick the next item on the menu. I liked being surprised and discovering the food myself.
You can't tell a tale like that without letting us all know what dog tastes like.

Word is it's nasty, tough and a little too... aromatic. I've met people who love it though. "Special" or "Aromatic" meat on the menu. Be aware.
