Yes, if only there existed "restaurants" that served this "Mexican" food you speak of.

Because I either get my Taco Bell without beef--again, an option--or the beef itself isn't the central flavor agent in most Taco Bell menu items?
But the beef is so damn nasty, it practically ruins the flavor of everything it touches. It's the one thing I can't stand about Taco Bell (that, and the old crunchy rice). If they improved the quality of the beef, it actually wouldn't be that bad of a place.
On the other hand, I do agree the steak and chicken is decent. Problem is, it raises the price to the point where I could just swing by any of the dozens of Mexican restaurants in the area and get much better versions of the same thing for the same price. Plus at the Mexican restaurants, you always get a bag of store baked tortillas and salsa, no matter how small your order is. That little bonus, alongside the better quality food for the same price, makes it hard to consider Taco Bell for anything besides the grilled stuffed burritos.
And yeah, I know you could say the same thing about any fast food restaurant. Why go to Hardee's and get a mushroom swiss burger, when I can go to one of the upscale BBQ places around here and get a real fresh cut of just off the farm beef grilled over a hickory fire? Thing is, Hardee's actually has fairly good hamburgers. Not up to the quality of the BBQ place, but not too half bad either. Taco Bell, on the other hand, is about the same price for much worse food comparatively. Save for a couple of menu items, it isn't all that good to me.
Because of that nasty ass beef.

I've gotten into some arguments with Duck over this before. He claims we don't have the same variety or quality of Mexican food up here as we do down there. I say a bunch of Mexicans come up, open restaurants, and make Mexican food, cooked by Mexican people, is about as close to Mexican cuisine as you can get outside of Mexico. It isn't exactly like they forgot to make a few select dishes right after they filled out the immigration papers.
I'm pretty sure we'll eventually get into a fistfight over this.

Tell us Mr Duck, I'm interested to know about the rest of Mexican cuisine.
I've never had Taco Bell (we have no such equivalent in the UK) but I do like the food we get in Mexican restaurants here. I don't know how authentic it is (not much probably, given the very, very poor show we got in Chinese restaurants here for years) but I suspect its the mix of ingredients I'm enjoying.
I've always wanted to try Taco Bell and this year I'm going to the USA to try it. (Well that's not why I'm going *Vegas*cough* but I'll be sure to have some).

I've been to Mexico and ordered (and loved) dishes that were nowhere near "the tourist menu." I've engaged in a hot-sauce escalation war with a server in downtown Cancun who thought (incorrectly) that he could break this white-ass gringo. I've been cooked ridiculously delicious traditional taco feasts by a roomie's Mexican mother who barely spoke a word of English.
None of which has anything to do with Taco Bell.
I love Taco Bell :)

Subjective Effect, I'm not MrDuck, and I'm not Mexican, but I can suggest that if you have never had it to start with a dish, any dish, that involves (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_%28sauce%29) Mole sauce. OMG MOLE ALONE CAN SOLVE THE WOLRD'S PROBLEMS
(Toxic Hell does indeed cure hangovers and munchies, and I'm sure you will have your fair share in Vegas)
And cheers back at ya Duck... the pics you are putting up are making my stomach grumble... OM NOM NOM NOM NOOOOMMMM!!!! We actually get pretty decent Mexican cuisine in Dallas (not just Tex-Mex, although I can love me some Tex-Mex too)

I won't eat any Mexican food that doesn't have chinchillas in it.
Sulphur on 26/1/2011 at 22:37
Whenever I see that word, I keep mistaking it for chihuahuas. Same thing though, right?
Renzatic on 26/1/2011 at 22:39
Ooh! Chihuahua burritos! Man, that'd be like the perfect fusion of eastern and western cuisine.
It's sorta the same thing. Chinchillas are more like medium sized fuzzy hamsters, less like dogs.

Two Mexican chains in Dallas that are pretty good and offer great authentic style food, although tweaked to be American upscale:
(

http://www.mcrowd.com/TacoDinerMenu.pdf) Taco Diner better)
And, my favorite (although it is a Tex-Mex/Mexican/San Salvadorian Fusion restaurant)... (
http://www.gloriasrestaurants.com/templates/glorias/images/dinner_menu.pdf) Gloria's *hums* NOW I'M EFFING HUNGRY
Of course, there are tons of holes in the wall, etc., places around that are just as good if not better.
