Two years ago Valve hired the talented team behind the popular top down co-op mod Alien Swarm. Since then they have been busy working on the Left 4 Dead Series, and now Portal 2. However, we never forgot about Alien Swarm and the team has spent a lot of time bringing the game to Source in between their contributions to the other Valve projects.
On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.

Stickied, Happy news indeed :)
Dalai, Cythe and Solaris (the original AS:I team) have always worked like Trojans and I can't believe there's any reason other than bureaucracy, red tape and clashes of interest for it not coming out sooner.
(

Since it's stickied I've gone ahead and added a date to the title. :)

Valve is the Rapture of computer games. If your favourite mod or mapper has gone quiet for the last few years they may have been spirited away.

dethtoll beat me to it. I had the same response. I wondered what the hell happened to the team. Last update for alien swarm source was 2007!

I actually had a chat with Dalai last week. Valve was so impressed with AS that they offered him and the gang positions without the usual grueling process most people have to go through to even get a shot at working there. I can't wait to play this new version. :)

So why's it free? I always thought it was going to be a full, retail game. On another forum, the answer was 'Because they know it sucks', but I don't know if Valve would associate themselves with a game they know isn't good enough.

Ours is not to question why.

What the hell!!!??? Fantastic.
Ha ha ha. I've been saying for years that this was an under appreciated gem! Why the hell did they go so quiet though?
Who is up for some TTLG action when it's out?

I seem to recall Valve has in the past shown that they can be hush-hush on certain projects. I recall the Orange Box coming right out of nowhere.
